She’s 98. And the isolation and loneliness came over her in a river of tears at my visit. Not able to see her son or daughter for 6 weeks. She wants to die.... Because at 98 the waiting is too much. I offered to FaceTime her son. She cried more. She wanted a real hug. I in my PPE said enough. I too bent over into her arms she wrapped so tight around me. I broke the rule. I hugged her till she could breathe. We both had a healing. I’d do it again. Love matters most. The older folks in long term care haven’t been touched or hugged. It’s causing failure to thrive. Hugs are a necessary part of living. - shared from a nurse See more

In 2018, Dr. Amanda Grenier (University of Toronto)’s lecture Late Life Homelessness: Aging on the Streets, in Shelters, and Long-term Care, discussed the res...ults from her study on homelessness in Montreal, Quebec, revealing the contradictions that exist between planning for older people and older people who are homeless. On her thoughts on the value of the Stephen Katz Distinguished Visiting Scholar in Interdisciplinary Aging Studies Program, Dr. Grenier states, This lecture series is something phenomenal in that it gives attention to social and interdisciplinary issues in aging, which is rare in the field. And it gives people the opportunity to think about new ideas and topics in aging that might not be seen in the mainstream. Trent University kawarthaNOW.com Peterborough Examiner Stephen Katz

Today, there was a heartbreaking view on Parliament Hill. The shoes behind me symbolize Covid-19 deaths in long-term care homes. Profit-driven care is dangerous... and it costs lives. Liberals can and must remove the profit from long-term care, so that we can save our loved one. Join me in calling for immediate action: NDP.ca/care
