Makeup Mondays~Contouring and Highlighting. I love these techniques for sure. They have their place but don’t need to be over the top every time. Contouring and highlighting are techniques used to change the shape of your face. Sounds weird...but I also learned that it originated decades ago in the drag community as a way to shape the face with makeup (thank you Cosmo ) so...that makes sense. Now because ‘natural makeup’ is so in right now we don’t need to use contouring a...nd highlighting as aggressively as we see on social and on the web. Dark lines of brown and white...you know you have to blend that in right?!? The idea is to go 1-3 shades lighter and darker to create highs and lows on the face. Bring out (highlight) what you want to see and shadow (contour) what you want to fade away. Make sense? There are a few ways you can use these techniques. Creams, powders, contour sticks to name a few. Remember no shimmer, so shadows and bronzer won’t work. You need a matte finish ideally. Pro Tip: To Contour~draw a 3 on each side of your face. Along the hairline/temple, under the cheekbone, and under the jaw line. Don’t forget to BLEND! To Highlight~Bone below the eye, brow bone, tip of nose if you’re lucky. Bottom line, makeup is supposed to be FUN!!! When in doubt, blend it out.... Finding the right brush and spray for our little ones is so important and makes our mornings go so much more smoothly...wouldn’t you agree? We’ve been loving our Color Me Wetbrush and Schwarzkopft Moisture Kick for a detangling spray (both available in our online shop). The brush is lightweight so that Naiyah can brush in her own when I’m not available. I personally like to say it starts with the cut though . A regular trim is important for kids too since it keeps all the... knots at bay. I like to add in some ‘invisible layers’ as well so there’s less hair getting caught at the back of their neck. I’ve been talking a lot about curls lately and I think it’s because I’ve had so many of you come in and want to embrace your natural texture. As I said before curls and texture are all the rage right now so it’s about the most perfect time to embrace what you naturally have and learn to live free and wild!! Coming from me this is HUGE because I’ve always loved my hair UBER straight!!! I’ve now learned to embrace the mess. The slept in, not perfect texture my hair takes even a...fter I flat iron it (honestly, you guys seem to love my hair best when it’s just before wash day! Go figure ) I’m also learning to love my curls just a wee bit more and that’s thanks to all of you! Now, let’s bust the myth that curly styles are easy. The wash and go mentality has got to end. I’m so sorry, I know it’s tough for some . Curls are a lifestyle you guys...they live and breathe on their own (can I get a hell yeah?!). They need moisture, care, love, time, and above all patience!! My biggest piece of advice guys is go with the flow and take baby steps towards those beautiful curls...you’re never gonna win with curls BUT if you learn the right products to use and techniques then you’ll be good to go. I promise!!
