July Summer is just around the corner, and for many people frequent visits to the nail salon are the norm. However, it is crucial that people who have diabetes exercise caution when considering getting a salon pedicure. Infections such as warts, athlete’s foot and nail fungus run wild in these environments. (In fact, communal areas such as public pools, hotels and gyms are also breeding grounds for infection.)... Salon instruments that are improperly cleaned not only spread infections, they can even spread hepatitis a serious liver condition. Think twice before stepping into footbaths or whirlpools, as they can spread bacteria and cause a minor scrape or cut to develop into a wound. Treat your feet right for the heat by seeking professional advice from your foot care specialist for regular foot examination, treatment for skin conditions and proper nail care. If you have diabetes, exercise vigilance when it comes to your foot care. Always remember to inspect your feet daily! Prevention is the key to keeping your feet healthy. RPNAO Statement: separation of migrant families in the United States Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario members are deeply unsettled by the situation unfolding in the United States and the continued justification of the abuse of children in the name of administrative policy. On behalf of RPNs in Ontario, we advocate for policy-makers to consider the social determinants of health and equity, as well as the obligation of all nurses to have an awareness of the gl...obal issues of vulnerable or equity-seeking populations and act locally to bring about change. When a policy is causing egregious harm, it must be re-evaluated and changed. As concerned Canadians, nurses, and health care professionals we urge the Government of Canada to raise this issue with the United States and condemn this policy and its shameful human rights violations. About the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario Founded in 1958, RPNAO is the voice of registered practical nursing in Ontario. There are approximately 43,000 RPNs working in Ontario, playing a vital role in the province's health care system. For more information about RPNAO, it's mandate and how RPNs contribute to Ontario's health care system, please visit rpnao.org.

JUNE Sandals And Diabetes: A Dangerous Combination The sunny days of summer have definitely arrived, and with them the urge to put away bulky winter clothes and shoes in exchange for lighter summer clothing and sandals.... However, for people who have diabetes, wearing sandals could potentially have some very serious consequences. Two known complications of diabetes that affect the legs and feet are neuropathy (lack of normal sensation) and peripheral vascular disease (poor blood flow.) When someone has either of these conditions, wearing sandals can be extremely risky. Because a sandal is open, it is easy for rocks or other debris to get into the sandal and under the foot. If a person has neuropathy, they will not feel the object. After taking many steps, this object can break the skin and create a wound, which could potentially become infected. Have your doctor or foot care specialist check both your feet for circulation and sensation. If the circulation in your legs is poor or you have neuropathy, then avoid wearing sandals. As the old adage goes: Better safe than sorry! Courtesy of Wounds Canada
