Fall Prevention Month November is Fall Prevention Month! Did you know, seniors with low vision are 2.5 times more likely to fall than those without it. Compounding the issue, vision loss is linked to decreased physical activity, which leads to a risk for falls and an increased fear of falls, which in turn increases seniors' risk of social isolation.... Between 20-30% of seniors fall each year. Falls remain the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among Canadian seniors. Approximately 30% of individuals aged 65 and older fall every year. Among those aged 80 and over, the risk of falls increases to 45%.
Diabetes Awareness Month November is Diabetes Awareness Month! This is a great time to talk about how eye exams can help detect and manage diabetes. -Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness in Canada.... -80% of vision loss from diabetes is preventable. -People with diabetes are more likely to develop cataracts at a younger age & are twice as likely to develop glaucoma. -Diabetic retinopathy often lacks early symptoms, people with diabetes should get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year.
Have you had pink eye? Do you know know what do use? Here's a neat little cheat-sheet for you!
Adult Eye Benefits Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids Several studies suggest omega-3 fatty acids may help protect adult eyes from macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome. Essential fatty acids also may help proper drainage of intraocular fluid from the eye, decreasing the risk of high eye pressure and glaucoma. Please see the attached article if you want to know more...... https://www.allaboutvision.com/nutrition/fatty_acid_1.htm

Never Rinse Your Contacts in Tap Water Acanthamoeba, a rare but nasty sight-destroying bug, may lurk in your water supply. Always use the solution recommended by your optometrist.
We are closed Saturday, September 5th, Sunday, September 6th & Monday September 7th for Labour Day Weekend. We will resume our regular hours on Tuesday, September 8th from 9:00am to 8:00pm. If you have an emergency, please go to a walk in clinic or emerge. We hope everyone can have a safe and happy long weekend. Remember to wear a mask when social distancing is not possible.
Take Your Contacts Out to Sleep Even just for a nap. Closing your eyes adds an extra layer blocking oxygen to your cornea, and germs love any environment thats dark and moist. If you spend all night with your contacts in, your risk of corneal ulcers is 10 to 15 times greater.
When Having Your Vision Tested, Relax and Blink Often If you dont, the smooth tear film on the surface of your eye starts to break up, making it more difficult for you to tell which lens is clearest.
Watch Out for the "Silent Thief" Glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness, is called a "silent thief" for good reason. In the early stages, its asymptomatic. The only way to catch it before significant damage has occurred is with regular eye exams.
All Adults Need a Biennial Eye Exam... ...Or an annual one if theyre over the age of 64. A 2018 study by the Canadian Association of Optometrists found that two out of three seniors had an eye condition such as cataracts, glaucoma or macular degeneration.
Your Eyes Arent Just the Windows to Your Soul... They also hold clues about your health. Eye doctors are often the first to notice serious diseasesincluding brain tumours, hypertension and diabetesby examining the condition of the blood vessels in your retina.
Whats the difference between amblyopia and strabismus? Amblyopia: Also known as lazy eye, amblyopia is when one eye is unable to see as well as the other eye, even with glasses on. During early childhood, if one eye turns in or out, or if vision is more blurred in one eye than the other, the connections between the brain and the eye are affected, causing amblyopia. Strabismus: Also known as crossed eyes, strabismus is a condition where the eyes do not point in the same direction. The most common type is where the eye turns inwards (towards the nose), but some people experience strabismus where their eye turns out, up or down. If left untreated, strabismus can cause amblyopia (lazy eye).
You may have heard these terms from your optometrists, but what do they mean? Myopia (near-sightedness): People with myopia are able to see near objects clearly but struggle with seeing distant objects, such as a board at school or TV screens. Hyperopia (far-sightedness): People with hyperopia find seeing distant objects easier than near objects. They have to use extra effort to focus on things far away and even more effort to see things close up.
We will be closed on Monday August 3rd for the civic holiday! We will return to regular hours on Tuesday August 4th from 9am-8pm! Please remember to be safe, and wear a mask when you arent able to maintain social distancing. Enjoy the weekend!

Dont forget to give your eyes some TLC! Take time to blink! When we use digital devices, we tend to blink significantly less, which can cause dry eye. ... Take a break from the screen with the 20/20/20 rule (every 20 minutes, focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), but also for longer periods of time to get your body moving and give your eyes some rest! Avoid using a screen one hour before bedtime - this can help improve your sleep, something we could all appreciate a little help with!
