Contrary to Premier Doug Ford's claims, most people are not doing what they can to protect themselves against #COVID19. As TVO's Nam Kiwanuka explains: "The sug...gestion that people aren’t doing their best is both misguided and hypocritical. The truth is, there’s very little that we as individuals can do without structural change. "We need sick leave, so that people don’t have to choose between losing a day’s wage and going to work ill. We need support for local businesses, for those living with disabilities, for caregivers who are being forced to leave the workforce because they have to watch children. We need a government that listens to expert advice on everything from class sizes to new restrictions." If you haven't done so yet, join the fight for decent work here: https://bit.ly/3kuEb91

Sudbury's got a lot of education, and a lot of contract workers providing that education. Here's a great forum for having some discussion around the issues facing contract workers in post-secondary education! This Friday - register now!

Ontario's minimum wage became $14.25 today. But it should have been $15.65. Please share if you think Doug Ford should restore our wage cut! For more information, click here: https://bit.ly/33jjE1X

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (10/01/2020) Black Lives Matter - Sudbury would like to thank the community for your incredible outpouring of support regarding the BIPOC ...Lives Matter mural on Elgin Street. We have been overwhelmed and deeply touched by the response and we are committed to continuing our work toward a City of Greater Sudbury that is welcoming, supportive, and safe for our BIPOC and 2SLGBTQ+ community. We are aware of the rarely-challenged white supremacist foundation of colonial Canadian culture, along with the rise of nationalist hate organizations whose establishment in Sudbury have occasionally made world news. As such, we expected some negative reactions to this city sanctioned, privately funded community art project. Sure enough, less than 24 hours after the mural was completed, a group of individuals were planning to deface it. The individuals involved are familiar faces to many activists and organizers in Sudbury, as several of them, including the person who made the original call to action, have been involved in an extended harassment campaign against marginalized people in the city. In fact, when the situation became so dire in January 2020 that four MPPs held a press conference to call for action, Greater Sudbury Police Services responded by publishing a press release saying that their hands were tied and that the libellous harassment would be able to continue with impunity. It’s no wonder, then, that these individuals felt empowered enough to plan a crime in broad daylight. It’s no wonder that they tagged the City of Greater Sudbury’s Facebook page in the announcement of their targeted act of intimidation. Greater Sudbury Police Services issued their public warning to the would-be vandals without our involvement. They did their jobs well in this case, considering the evidence being virtually handed to them, and we thank them for that. It is a shame that damage to city property is what prompted such a quick and timely response, where threats of damage to human life could not. Within the City of Greater Sudbury, there has been a growing culture of intersectionality, community care, and mutual respect, all in the face of a rising tide of violent hatred. This has not been cultivated by efforts on the part of Greater Sudbury Police Services and other city officials. This is being achieved in spite of their apathy and unwillingness to engage in the work of decolonization. The credit is owed instead to the grassroots community groups who came before us, and who we look forward to continuing to work with. #blacklivesmattersudbury #BLM

Tied to the Consumer Price Index, the Minimum Wage goes up today by 25. That's still 75 less than the $15 minimum wage that was legislated by the previous government, and rolled back by the current government. Remember when there was all the concern about the jump to $14 and how it was going to crash the economy and lead to widespread layoffs? Instead we saw unemployment drop, and the GDP in Ontario went up. Because when we have more money in our pockets, we spend it, whic...h stimulates the economy. The LIVING WAGE in Sudbury is calculated at $16.98. So although we welcome the 25 increase to the minimum wage, we note that it still falls far short of what we need.

If you could, with one stroke of a pen, make things safer and more humane for workers, would you do it? What would you think of someone who wouldn't? That's where we stand today in Ontario.

BREAKING NEWS: Organizing works! The federal Liberal government just agreed to our demand for at least $500 per week for EI and income supports! "Thes...e changes will also establish a minimum weekly benefit payment of $500 for all EI recipients, at the same level as the CRB." Let's keep fighting to ensure migrant workers have access to these supports and to ensure the Liberals honour the promise for a $15 federal minimum wage!

Our refugee and asylum seeking community here in Sudbury has spoken passionately about this issue. Our international students have spoken. We've heard from agricultural workers about the horrific conditions they have faced. It is time to words and promises into deeds. It is time for #StatusForAll

We have a new blog post! COVID has brought our migrant farm workers into the public conciousness. Read some personal reflections by an agricultural worker on the horrific realities of farm work, and the conditions migrant workers are subjected to. #StatusForAll https://sudburyworkerscentre.ca/we-need-statusforall/

The system is designed to hide and silence the voices of the migrant workers on whom we depend. [Workers] are many times bused in and isolated on the farms. W...e never see these workers, because they are kept working for incredibly long hours, often in atrocious conditions, and don’t have the time or transportation to go anywhere. As we’ve learned through COVID, we cannot actually run our food chain without migrant workers, said Florence of the Sudbury Workers Education & Advocacy Centre All migrant workers deserve full and permanent immigration status now! #StatusForAll https://www.thesudburystar.com//demonstrators-in-sudbury-d
