If you are wild about bees, there are many things that you can do to help! Whether you are visiting Grasslands National Park, social distancing or isolating fro...m your own home, or looking for a new hobby, there are lots of things that you can do: Citizen Science Bumble Bee Watch Scientists in North America are just starting to scratch the surface about what species live where. There is a large project called Bumble Bee watch If you see a bee while you are hiking in the park, or even in your own back yard (or anywhere in North America), snap a picture, upload it to bumblebeewatch.org (or the app), use the key to identify your bumble bee species and get verification from an expert. This data is then used by scientists to get a better idea of species ranges. Other apps like iNaturalist are good, but this is verified by an expert entomologist (insect scientist)! What you can do from home: Learning more about native bees is the first step. The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation has a YouTube channel which features a Classroom Series for Youth, resources for insect identification, gardening, pesticides and basic bee biology! Their website also have a variety of resources: https://www.xerces.org/ Be a responsible consumer! Avoid the use of herbicides and pesticides! Plant a variety of native wildflower plants. Make sure that they are native to your area. Be careful because some wildflower mixes contain seeds for species that are invasive to your area (such as baby’s breath!) Check out the Native Plant Society of Saskatchewan for native plant sources (https://www.npss.sk.ca/native-plant-sources) Learn about invasive species and be sure your yard doesn’t have any! #BuzzingBeeFacts #GrasslandsNP
