Ok... if you're not a plant geek, give this one a miss. This season I've undertaken a hot callusing pipe for grafting hard-to-graft and warmth-demanding species overwinter. The main challenges with grafting mulberry, persimmon, walnut, chestnut and hickory are their obligate need for temps in the mid-20s to heal graft unions and begin growing as a grafted tree. Even then, they're slow and may not take in time. The complications therein are many:... -if walnuts and mulberry roots begin to break dormancy, they push a latex-filled sap which fouls any grafts -if scions begin to wake up and leaf out, they transpire moisture which they cannot replenish without a root system, then dessicate and die before forming a union. -time in May is dreadfully short as it is, so grafting at the moment of perfect temperatures and growth is a monstrous, protracted workload which few land-based businesses could recon with. Hence, the Hot Pipe. This thermostatic doodad keeps the graft union at an even 24-27 degrees while the rest of the rootstock and scion are around 8 and stay fully dormant. 3 weeks on this thing heals any graft union that has any will to live whatsoever. It's brought immense joy to my winters, as I can now graft the really tricky stuff for months on end. My issue now is running out of stored rootstock (by tomorrow) and having to wait til ice-out in March to get more.
