Ever wonder about the benefits of acupuncture and how it works? The beneficial effects of acupuncture are derived from its unique ability to re-establish the normal flow of energy (or Qi) along the multitude of pathways in the human body. This is a philosophical departure from western medicine, as acupuncture addresses pain and dysfunction in a holistic manner. Although acupuncture does produce physiological responses, in Eastern terms, this is due to the stimulation of acupuncture points causing an increase in the energy flow. Acupunctures potential is very broad and is effective for an enormous number of pain syndromes and physical dysfunctions. Give us a call to find out if acupuncture is right for you! 780-459-1066.

Ice vs. heat: what works best? Ice should be applied within the first 2 or 3 days following acute recent injuries such as sudden trauma or sports injuries. It can also be helpful with overuse injuries, such as tendinitis or bursitis. Ice helps to relieve the immediate pain and swelling associated with these types of injuries. Heat, on the other hand, is more beneficial in conditions where pain, muscle tightness, and joint stiffness are present. Heat has a relaxing effect on the soft tissues and encourages an increase in circulation, which assists in the healing process.

Do you suffer from back spasms, and arent too sure why? Back spasms are caused from either one specific incident where you immediately felt pain after incorrect lifting or twisting, or more commonly from daily irritants that add up to a major problem such as improper postures or repetitive activities. It is best to rest in a symmetrical position such as lying on your back with bent knees or lying on your side with a pillow between your knees and ankles. Using heat is also be...neficial as it increases blood flow which helps with healing and to relax the tight muscles. Try to balance rest with mobility and walk around for short periods if the spasms arent too severe. If the spasms dont settle in a couple of days, seek medical attention. At Summit Physiotherapy, you would be assessed and treated. Treatment could include manual therapy, stretches, postural advice, core exercises, ultrasound, intramuscular stimulation (IMS), or acupuncture to settle the spasms.

We are Still OPEN! In at time such this, it can be stressful to venture into the public, but rest assured we are doing everything we can to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus and still offer a safe and protected environment where people can still get the help they need. We have always followed Alberta Health Services (AHS) guidelines for infection prevention and control but we have now taken the initiative to go beyond the normal protocols. ... Some of the steps we have taken are: asking all clients and staff to stay home if they are not feeling well providing disinfectant to all clients to use before and after treatments creating proper social distance between individuals (chair arrangement in waiting room/hallway) weve asked our floor staff to bring people into rooms as soon as possible to avoid people congregating in the waiting rooms weve been disinfecting waiting room chairs, arm rests, door knobs (weve left the door open so people dont have to touch the door knob), debit machine, counter tops, table tops, keyboards and phones at least twice an hour. weve removed all magazines in the clinic as per usual were disinfecting the beds and changing pillow linens after each client we are now even more diligent with disinfecting the chairs/arm rests, bells, bolsters, physiotherapists stools and the bed levers after every client in the cubicles as well. were continuing to disinfect all physiotherapy tools and exercise equipment after each use and were of course are encouraging all support staff (receptionist, floor staff) to constantly wash hands and use gloves when cleaning and ask all therapists to disinfect their hands before and after seeing every client. We are committed to providing a safe environment for both clients and staff while still being able to offer the great service that people have become accustom to at Summit Physiotherapy & Massage Therapy!
