Winter is coming :)

A GREAT POST By Amy Skinner: The problem with horse training is that society is set up to believe that you can buy a service and have things the way you want in... a certain time frame. People look at horse training as if they're spending their money on a product. And yet even the best horse trainers will tell you the horse takes its own time, and no one can guarantee a horse will be doing what you want from it when you want from it. The other problem is that even if your trainer can get t done with your horse, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will be able to. Getting a horse right takes an amount of commitment on the owners part to develop the same type of relationship that the trainer has, otherwise how can you expect from your horse for yourself what your trainer gets, when it's they who have put in the hours, the sweat, the patience and the desire to get Along with that horse? You aren't spending money on a tune up for your car that you can take home and drive. The fact that money is involved leads people to believe they deserve something for what they paid, and they do, but, it happens in the animals time, not the humans. I think any good trainer would say they would do this for free if they could, just to help horses and people. And yet, we all have to eat. -words by Amy Skinner Photo is of Ray Hunt. See more

Do you get nervous when you compete? Good! It means you’re taking it seriously. But if your nervousness is making your hands numb and your mind race to the poi...nt where you are not performing well and it’s not fun anymore - you may need some strategies for overcoming showtime anxiety. The solution: get your brain working again. Here are a few things I think about when I’m team penning to make sure my nerves don’t get the best of me: if I’m nervous on the way to the show, I visualize exactly how I’m going to get my horse ready and warm up. I go through in my mind the exercises I will do and how I want my horse to feel before I show. before my run, I focus on exactly what my horse needs me to do. How am I going to ask him to do every maneuver? How do I need to ride so he can do his job? What is my job on the penning team? I make sure to watch the cattle not the riders going before me. I try to remember which cows stand out in colour and what their numbers are. I look for the cows that could be a challenge - the ones I need to watch out for. I make a strategy for the type of cattle they are. Are they flighty? I’m gonna go quieter in the herd. Are they heavy? I’m going to be careful not to over-ride them and to finish them deep at the pen end. Also remember to number count! if I find my mind is freezing up in the show pen I just ask myself - where do I need to ride to right now? In penning you never want to be standing still or you’re in the way! If my horse isn’t doing what it needs to do - I try not to panic and ask myself how do I need to ride right now to help my horse? If you have something that particularly makes you nervous about showing - this is something you should also problem shoot with your coach. How do you overcome showtime nerves?

#longlivecowboys How much weight can a horse carry. in my experience, a horse can carry an infinite amount. They can carry the weight of broken hearts, broken homes, and broken bodies. Countless tears sometimes comb their tangled manes. Moments when parents and friends cannot be there to help and hold a person, horses embrace and empower. They carry physical, mental, and emotional handicaps. They carry hopes and dreams; and they will carry the stress from your day when you c...an't carry it anymore. They carry graduations, they carry new careers, they carry moves away from everything familiar, they carry marriages, they carry divorces, they carry funerals, they carry babies before they are born, and sometimes they carry the mothers who cannot carry their own baby. They carry mistakes, they carry joy, they carry the good and they carry the bad. They carry drugs and addictions, but they also carry the celebrations. They will carry you to success when all you have felt is failure. They will carry you, never knowing the weight of your burdens and triumphs. If you let them, they will carry you through life, and life is hard, life is heavy. But a horse will make you feel weightless under it all. I did not write this. Feel free to copy and paste, or share.

We all have those friends who only show up when they need something. Are you that friend to your horse? Getting your performance horse to reach their full poten...tial requires that animal to trust that you’re on their side. As a trainer, this is super important as we usually only have a month or two to win over a horse’s heart and mind so it will allow us to teach it something. Some ways to be a good friend to your horse: bring them in, brush them and then turn them back out tie them up for an hour or so (with another horse in view) before you ride or haul them leave them tied up saddled for half an hour or so after you ride walk out to visit them in their pen or pasture to offer them a pat, hug and maybe a treat Show them that you being around doesn’t always mean work for them and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish .

Petting your pony is not essential. Period. If you aren’t willing to not come visit your horse for 2 weeks for fear of their safety/etc. why are you boarding ...there in the first place? Don’t forget that this isn’t about you, there’s not a single soul who could have seen this coming. So don’t make it about you. See more

Gentle Horses... Give to me a gentle horse, a character strong and kind, the gelding who is steadfast, with a soft eye and quiet mind. Give to me, for my last... mount, a beast with a worthy soul, who’s heart is true and never questions a saddle horses role. There is a horse, I know for sure, a true friend to my western heart... a quick footed horse, well bred and sound, loyal, keen and smart. This horse will be my last horse, and I will never chance another... mishap, wreck or broken bone or bronc ride due to weather. Together we will ride through bush, cross creeks and rough terrain, chase cows through belly deep grass, hunch our heads against the rain. Rope a thousand steers and pair them up just so, that even the blindest heeler couldn’t miss that easy throw! Partners to the end, this horse and I will be, and he will carry my boots backward, when this world cuts me free. The End Genie Lynch

Shown here is the structural integrity of the lamina. The second picture shows the lamina with laminitis disease. Laminitis is when the lamina becomes inflamed ...and can no longer support the weight of the bony column. Many horses can have underlying metabolic disease that can lead to this painful and debilitating condition. If you are concerned or have questions about laminitis in your horse, call momentum today! We’re here to help get your horse back to performance ready! See more

How "old" is your horse in human years? I assume a mule chart would be slightly different.
