Hello students and parents, Did you know? Provincial guidelines allow safe singing throughout the province, but not in Nova Scotia. On October 23rd, choral leaders met with Dr. Strang to discuss the need to review policies around singing in schools. Here are a few highlights from that meeting: ... - Policies restricting singing in schools have remained intensely restrictive while policies around classrooms and athletics in particular have relaxed. Teams are still allowed to play with 50 athletes, unmasked, indoors. In sharp contrast, distanced and masked singing - individually or in groups - continues to be prohibited in our schools, even outdoors. -Safe singing is allowed in school settings in all Atlantic Bubble provinces except Nova Scotia and community choral singing is allowed in NS, under provincially approved guidelines. - There are many health and well-being benefits for students provided by group singing that students are currently missing in their lives. - Singing is the core of elementary music curriculum. Without it, a foundation in student music education is missing. - Slideshow presentation from Oct 23 meeting: http://www.nscf.ca//Choral-Singing-COVID-Presentation-NSCF - Recording of Oct 23 meeting: https://youtu.be/hRoBOd0-uCQ A working group with the NSCF is continuing to pursue a revisitation of these policies, and their Facebook page is sharing posts about the issue. Follow the NSCF Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/novascotiachoralfederation for more details.

Please note our COVID precautions in reopening Summit below: Dear Parents, We are excited to announce the reopening of The Center for Music on Summit the week of September 7th. As dedicated... musical professionals, we recognize the need, value and importance of the arts and musical learning. Not only does it promote creative thinking, increased cognitive skills and a sense of accomplishment, but it provides a means for self expression, a release from worry and anxiety whilst helping restore the human spirit. These last few months have been extremely challenging and worrisome for all of us. We’ve had to learn to live differently and work differently. We have taken the necessary steps and precautions to prevent COVID-19 from spreading here in the community and at home with our families. At the Center for Music on Summit, we have a unique situation where we teach private music lessons in large separate studios. It gives teachers and students the ability to safely self distance while being able to continue with their musical education. For the safety of both teachers and students for the upcoming fall semester please note the following: 1. We will be staggering our lesson times this year in order to give the teachers time to clean before each student enters for their lesson. Students will be asked to sanitize their hands upon entering the studio and upon leaving. 2. We will be using an added entrance to one of the studios this fall to help ease some of the congested traffic areas. 3. We will not be able to accommodate waiting areas and ask that parents drop off and pick up on time. There will be no sitting or lingering in the hallways. 4. Although washrooms will be available and cleaned on a regular basis throughout the day, we do ask, where possible, that students use the washroom at home before coming to their lessons. 5. If your child or a member of your family are experiencing any of these symptoms; new or worsening cough shortness of breath or difficulty breathing temperature equal to or over 38C feeling feverish chills fatigue or weakness muscle or body aches new loss of smell or taste headache gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting) feeling very unwell Do not send your child to Summit for their lesson that day. Speak to your teacher regarding a possible make up lesson later in the term or alternatively, an online lesson. As we all know, there is no 100% guarantee to block COVID-19 and there is always an element of risk in everything we do in these times. However, at the Center for Music on Summit, we will endeavour to take every precaution to keep our students and teachers safe in the months to come. If you have further questions or concerns, please talk to your teachers. Thank you and see you in September, Marsha Sobey & Janette Keefe

Hello everyone, We are certainly missing seeing all of you coming and going at the Center for Music on Summit. The house is pretty lonely and asking Where did all the wonderful music go? We are currently waiting on the Provincial Governments direction as to when we can re-open and safely resume holding our regularly scheduled lessons. We will update all of you once we know when the restrictions have lifted. In the meantime, keep the music flowing in your own homes! See you soon.

The Center for Music on Summit will be offering introductory Creating Music Together group classes to the community. They will take place over an eight-week period. This is a pilot program which we are very excited about developing at Summit. When we planned the program, we took into consideration the rich tapestry of musical roots in this community, and the infusion of new immigrants coming into our area. Our exploration and creative inspiration from all styles and genres of music will provide an innovative musical journey into this universal language.
