That term life insurance policy you purchased in your late 20s was a good first step toward insulating your family from financial uncertainty, but three kids, two jobs and one big mortgage loan later, it may no longer provide the type or amount of coverage you need. Indeed, life insurance is rarely a set it and forget it solution. At every life stage, financial professionals suggest reviewing your policy to determine whether more or less coverage may be appropriate. Read More

An outgrowth of having great wealth is a desire to keep as much as possible in the family by passing along assets to future generations. Life insurance is a popular way for the wealthy to maximize their after-tax affluence and have more money to pass on to heirs. Heres how and why insurance helps.

Whole life insurance can be pricey. Term life insurance, while more affordable, only offers limited-time coverage. Universal life insurance, on the other hand, can provide full-life coverage, like whole life does. But overall costs are often lower than whole life. Heres what youll need to know before choosing the right policy to protect your family.

In addition to the death benefit, with whole life insurance, you also accumulate cash value. Over time, our kids policies could be worth a significant amount eventually tens of thousands of dollars. And with the type of policies they have, once the money is there, the value wont go down unless they take it out.1 They could use the money for college, a down payment on a home or emergencies. But I kind of hope they keep it, and their insurance all the way to retirement. The stable cash value of life insurance can be a great supplement to retirement income something that you could tap in down market years (because it wont decline with the market). Read more

Buying life insurance and only using it for the death benefit is like purchasing an iPhone and only using it to make calls youre missing out on a whole lot of added functionality. Yes, life insurance provides a death benefit, but it can do so much more. In fact, its an asset that forms a cornerstone of your financial plan and can be used differently as your life progresses.

Even before talking about your budget, there needs to be a conversation about your values and priorities. People spend more time planning their vacations than they do thinking about these important life decisions. You need to have a good, healthy understanding about whats important to you

Life insurance is, first and foremost, about protecting the ones you love after youre gone. But some types can actually help you in retirement as well, by providing: A way to accumulate a source of funds. Tax-deferred growth insulated from market volatility. The option to take tax-deferred distributions.

What makes the cash value of your whole life policy so beneficial? It can function as your emergency savings. It creates the basis of your financial foundation. ... Its free from market volatility and the risk associated with stock investments. It earns a better rate of return than a savings account, money market. It frees up money for other investments while continuing to grow inside a whole life insurance policy. It allows you to become your own bank.

How many hours have you spent watching your kids build things out of blocks? If youre like most parents, probably a lot. They make the most creative things, towers that tilt, castles, walls and even trains. If theyre like many kids, theyve probably asked you to join them in building things. Those blocks, put together on the floor to make a solid base, can make a foundation for something really strong. Life insurance is a little like that too. Its the foundation you can build for your kids so they have something strong enough to build on.

As Mark Twain famously said, The secret to getting ahead is getting started. Were excited to let you know weve made some big improvements to help you achieve your financial best faster. 76% of millennials say money stress is their top stressor, driven primarily by credit card overspending that leads to debt and lack of saving and investing. In fact almost 6 in 10 Canadians now carry credit card debt, and getting out of debt has been the #1 financial goal 9 years in a row.... Whats more, almost 70% of Canadians dont believe theyll have enough money to retire. Money is something you have to master, just like your health, its too important to just dabble. To be truly happy and fulfilled you need a certain level of financial freedom. We have two primary choices in life we can either accept conditions as they are or we can take the responsibility to change them. Its time for a change, its time to MoneyUp.

Lets start off with some good news! Recent stats have shown that Canada is flattening the coronavirus curve. While were not out of the storm yet, its nice to see positive results coming from all of our sacrifices. For the past month and a half, this pandemic has taught us important lessons on our finances. Many of us have learned how deeply our financial health impacts our happiness during these uncertain times. A past U.S. study has shown that 9 out of 10 people agree tha...t nothing makes them happier than feeling like their finances are in order. So when it comes to finding a true pathway to happiness, remember that splurging on short-term pleasures like owning the most trendy sneakers is nothing compared to mastering your money in the long run. To stay focused on controlling your spending, paying off debt and saving, you should set aside some time each day to review your spending and make any necessary changes. Schedule two minutes per day for these activities. Use effective reminders to make sure you keep doing these (try setting up daily reminders on your phone). Its a lot easier than you think and, once youve done it repeatedly, it will eventually become a habit. As you notice your progress, you will start feeling happier and even more motivated. Getting the results you want will take time, but just like how Canada is starting to control the COVID-19 spread with on-going measures, good financial habits will eventually help you take better control of your finances. So lets get going!

The economic impact from COVID-19 continues to be felt by almost everyone as job losses mount. Being on top of your finances is now more important than ever. For those of us that are fortunate enough to still have an income, its key to start building a financial buffer in case the unexpected happens and your next paycheck never comes. Many people believe that this kind of an emergency fund should cover your essential expenses for 3 to 6 months. But, since many Canadians are... currently in debt, building that kind of savings simply isnt realistic in a short period of time. That said, you can still take steps towards being in a better financial position even while youre staying at home. Have any questions? Lets have a quick chat!
