Suncor is completing the final phases of the startup process at the Commerce City Refinery. During normal startup activities, increased flaring may occur and an emission that appears smoky (white in color) may be visible. Our community air monitoring results since the October 21 event have shown no detectible levels of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfur dioxide (SO2), or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Suncor also monitors the Colorado Department of Health and Environment’s (CDPHE) community air monitoring data. The state’s air quality monitoring data can be found at: https://www.colorado.gov/airquality/report.aspx. The CDPHE monitors located near the refinery include La Casa, Globeville, Swansea, CAMP, and Welby. Convened under Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance - COSIA, the Water Technology Development Centre (WTDC) is a first-of-its-kind demonstration site where Suncor and partners, Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Husky Energy and CNOOC International, test water treatment technologies at a commercial scale. It’s Global Handwashing Day! Washing your hands is an important way to prevent the spread of COVID-19, colds and the flu.

The Suncor Sarnia refinery will be conducting an emergency response exercise this morning, Thursday, October 15. Due to the nature of the scenario, community members may notice activity in the area of the Suncor dock, including the presence of the Emergency Command vehicle. Our spill response boat will also be out on the St. Clair River to practice deploying the boom. Should an actual emergency occur during the exercise, immediate notification will be provided via the regular channels, including the CAER Industry Update Line (1-855-472-7642).
