Pimachiowin Aki Guardians are Anishinaabe men and women who are the eyes and ears of the land and waters for their communities. They also keep Indigenous knowle...dge alive through their work with children and youth, in schools and in the community. This summer, a group of teens from Poplar River spent 5 days camping near Weaver Lake, learning how to live on the land. This knowledge-sharing trip involved cultural knowledge, language and history lessons. I want to create a spark that might inspire them to work as a guardian in the future, says Norway Rabliauskas, Guardian for Poplar River First Nation. The warm days in late summer find moose thirsty, and they can usually be found in wetlands and along shorelines. From now until early October, moose will be mat...ing in the forests in Pimachiowin Aki. Known as the rutmale moose (bulls) shed the velvet on their antlers and search for females (cows). After mating season, bull moose lead a solitary life, focusing on feeding for winter. Photo credit: Hidehiro Otake
