Sunshine Coast Skating Club 10.01.2021

Representing the Sunshine Coast Skating Club, Lucy Watson competed in the BCYK Section Super Series Provincial Championships for Competitive Stream Skaters. This competition normally happens in November and determines who progresses forward to Jr Nationals. This year is a year of firsts however, the first time the competition was moved to December and the first time there will be a second event in February to determine the final 6 progressing to Jr Nationals. It is Lucy’s f...irst year in the Pre Novice category moving up after her silver medal placement at BC winter Games in Juvenile last year. Many are second year competitors and Lucy placed 9th out of a field of 55 pre Novice skaters. Her goal was top ten; she was 10th in the short program and 8th in the free program resulting in 9th overall with a personal best score. This was the first time ever, the judges were not in the building but rather judging virtually from home on computer screens and programs were submitted virtually. We are extremely proud of Lucy! She is 13 years of age and trains hard. She has had the disadvantage of not being able to train here on the coast for spring and summer. This past year travelling to other communities to train during those months. We are grateful that the SCRD Board of Directors voted to keep ice in moving forward to the end of May. It’s all about progression, Lucy is a talented, committed skater and the goal moving forward is to continue to improve, stay healthy and compete again in February. Congratulations Lucy, the SCSC is proud of you and wishes you the best in February.

We’ve had some great letters of support sent in to Area Representatives. Here are a few words from one: We agreed a long time ago that our community wanted to have access to these recreation facilities that's why GACC and SAC were built. There was referendum and it was made clear that our community agreed to pay what was needed to keep and operate all of our recreation facilities ( 3 pools, 2 ice rinks, community centers etc, not to mention soccer fields, parks, etc.). Usin...g the emotional ties to COVID to put forward an agenda of recreation facility closures is disgusting. There simply HAS to be some value seen in giving kids sports/fitness activities. These facilities run a deficit every year (not new only being positioned as such by SCRD), that was mandated when they were built, the reason is that the physical/mental health of our community HAS value. Maybe things aren’t going to go back to normal but can we not give the youth of this amazing community SOME semblance of normalcy? There’s still time to make your voice heard... send in your letter as to why recreation is important to you and your family. A heart filled Thank you to everyone who is supporting this campaign.

Thank you for all your support to re-start recreation on the Sunshine Coast. We have reached nearly 350 signatures on our petition. But this is not enough. We need more support. There are elected officials on the Sunshine Coast who are challenging the essential service of recreation. Recreation IS essential. It is essential for physical and mental health as well as social well-being. Community Recreation provides opportunities for active living and recreation in a safe,... inclusive environment. By creating a positive atmosphere, these facilities become essential to personal health and wellness, thereby reducing reliance on healthcare and other costly social services. Recreation creates a more desirable Coast for all. A place that attracts youth and families, who are essential to our work force. If you want your child to participate in ice sports this fall, or in the near future please continue to share the petition with your Coast friends, family, neighbours and co-workers. Let’s keep our kids local. https://www.change.org/sunshinecoastrecreationfacilities See more

It’s time to let our elected officials know this is important for the youth of our community At this time, we ask you to help advocate for our youth by signing the following petition, put together by our local Ice Organizations. Please share the link with your extended families and friends on the Sunshine Coast, your neighbours, and your colleagues. https://www.change.org/sunshinecoastrecreationfacilities
