Silver Kettle with Animal-Shaped Spout in the Shape of He() This silver kettle with animal-shaped spout in the shape of He was made by the famous Japanese metal craftsman, Hata Zoroku ( , ?~1932. From his early age, Zoroku had a special interest in Chinese bronze wares, and he later devoted himself in learning about Chinese bronze wares, and also making his kettles in the shape of them. The above silver kettle is in the shape of He (, a classical Chinese bronze ...ware for serving wine. On the lid of the original box of this kettle, there is a paragraph, which was copied from Xuanhe Classical Bronze Wares Catalogue , a 12th century catalogue of classical bronze wares. The text introduces a ware called Han Pheneoix He (), which inspired Hata Zoroku to make this kettle. #exhbition #vancouver #artsoninstagram #antiquekettle #japaneseart #teaware #metalwork #metalworking #japaneseantique #japaneseantiques #teaculture #taisho #showa #bronzeware #eastasian

Ryubundo Iron Kettle with Wild Goose and Kanshi Pattern This work will be displayed at SUNZEN’s upcoming exhibition - REINCARNATION, the Second Life of Antique Japanese Kettles. More about the exhibition: https://sunzen.shop//reincarnation-the-second-life-of-anti... The kettle above was made by the historically well-known Japanese metalwork studio, ryubundo (). In its three-hundred-year-long history, ryubundo is always known for their exquisite workmanship and unique designs. Having got inspiration from other forms of art, the masters of ryubundo were always painters, poets, sinologists, art historians, besides craftsmen. Ryubundo was mentioned in Natsume Sseki’s novel, and was described as the highest level of teawares back at his time (early 20th century) Same as the other premium craftsmanship at their time, there is sometimes a sinologistic pursuit of beauty in lots of ryubundo’s works. This iron kettle with wild goose and kanshi pattern combines crudeness and sophistication. The uneven surface almost keeps the original state of the ironstone, indicating the wabisabi spirit of Japanese tea culture. Meanwhile, the calligraphy on the body and the gold and silver inlaid wild goose pattern on the handle shows the delicacy of the craftsmanship. #antiquekettle #artoninstagram #japaneseart #eastasian #teaware #exhibition #gallery #japaneseantique #antique #japaneseantique #asia #asianarts #teaculture #artsoninstagram

SUNZEN Art Gallery is pleased to announce our next exhibition, REINCARNATION, a group exhibition of antique Japanese metalworks. Featuring 60 antique iron and silver kettles from the 18th to 20th century Japan, in combination with Ming-style Chinese furniture, bonsai, and kintsugi art pieces, this exhibition invites the viewers to appreciate, visit, and get involved into the distant memories created by a long forgotten craftsmanship. 1128 Short... Intro The past is a foreign country. In a modern, industrialized era, lots of eastern traditional arts and crafts are facing the destiny of being marginalized, symbolized, and defamiliarized. They are recognized as distant memories, belonging to the past other than the present, covered by dust on the antique shelf, and are far away from people’s daily life. Reincarnation - the Second Life of Antique Japanese Kettles features around 60 antique kettles from the 18th to 20th century Japan, in combination with Ming-style Chinese furniture, bonsai, and kintsugi art pieces. In this exhibition, we invite the antiques, which are often separated and alienated, back to the table and people’s everyday life scene as the reincarnation of the blurry, lost memories of a pre-modern philosophy and lifestyle. This exhibition aims at shortening the distance between eastern traditional craftsmanship and people’s daily life, and unmasking the unique beauty of eastern art pieces. It is for the souls of the forgotten artistic traditions to reincarnate in this new world, under a new era.
