Suomi Koti is moving forward and has decided to go on with our plan to build a new, 60-unit independent seniors building to co-exist behind our current one! Our population is aging and we want to build for our future and ensure Thunder Bay can accommodate everyone who needs affordable housing, when the time comes. As a non-profit organization, we are doing everything we can to make this possible and raise the funds we need. It will be a long journey, but just know that our c...urrent mission is focused on bettering the community. COVID-19 has put a lot of goals and construction on hold for many organizations and we have dealt with multiple set backs. Hi everyone. It has been a long time since we’ve posted an update: here is where things are heading! Originally, the purpose of the Finlandia Co-operative of T...hunder Bay Inc. was to buy the Finnish Labour Temple, maintain it, and run businesses out of it. As you know, we weren’t successful in securing enough funding. However, this did result in the creation of some local partnerships and support that will continue to assist the Co-op. The Finlandia Co-operative has since had the opportunity to speak to the new owner of the Finnish Labour Temple. The new owner has expressed an interest in re-opening the Hoito restaurant and having it be a part of the Finnish community. Given that the community drive was focused on saving the Hoito, we’ve started discussing what it could mean if the Co-op was a part of this. Our discussions are still in the early stages. With this in mind, we are looking for up to six more interim board members to help us develop the idea. We are particularly interested in candidates with accounting, and/or restaurant experience but we'd be happy with business and communications experience too. And if you're plain enthusiastic about helping, we'd be happy to have you.
