Understanding ministerial Greatness. About 32 years ago, as I was driving my pastor in his Mercedes Benz 200 from a preaching engagement, we came down with a fl...at tire and this was just before midnight. I came down quickly and checked the trunk for the spare tire only to discover it was not there. At this point, I was faced with two problems; first was the security of my pastor and secondly that of his car. So as I was running about the place wandering how to secure the Benz, my Pastor called out and said, Yinka, please let’s find a way to send for the ambulance from the clinic to evacuate us from this dark lonely road, our lives are more important than the Benz. My pastor was a medical doctor and had an ambulance in his hospital. What he said was really funny to me because at that stage of my life, I could not understand how my life can ever be of more value or worth than a Mercedes Benz car. Fortunately, I was able to wave down a man who was driving along the same route that night. After pleading with him, he agreed to take my pastor to his house while I stay back and look around for a vulcanizer to fix the tire. But my pastor professor Ishaya Audu would not hear of that and insisted we leave the car behind, claiming it was too late into the night to do anything. He said I could come back the next morning to retrieve the car, because my life was much more valuable and greater than the Benz to him. As we were driving back to my pastors house, my mind was so heavy, I kept thinking about what could happen to his car. As we dropped my pastor at his residence, without his knowledge, that same night I made my way back to where we had left the car and slept in it till the next morning. Very early that morning, I got the car fixed and returned it to my pastors house. WHAT IS THE LESSON TO LEARN? I. I had a pastor who believed that I was worth more than material things. Today we have pastors who use and train their spiritual children on how to exploit, manipulate and steal from people all in the name of prophecy. A spiritual father that trains you on tricks and manipulations is nothing but an agent of the devil in your life. 2. The spiritual father who teaches you on how to help him fake, arrange or even testify about fake miracles or prophecies is taking away the reality of God from your life. If all you learn is falsehood, you will never see or experience the true God. 3. Greatness is not in the demonstration of power or size of your ministry. Greatness is your ability to submit yourself to the leading and Lordship of the Holy Spirit over your life. My pastor never prophesied or opened the eyes of the blind, he never healed a cripple or opened deaf ears, but he opened my eyes and my heart to loving and seeing Jesus in my daily walk and work with the Lord. He opened my eyes to understand that my life was worth more than a Mercedes Benz car even when I did not know it. Today I have given out many Mercedes Benz 500 cars to pastors etc. We must always remember and understand that our God will always bless us with these things because He knows that we have need of them, but the life of a man does not consist of the abundance of the things that he possesses. Today I will not even sleep in a Jet to protect it because I have come to understand that our greatness is not in what controls us but what we control. My dear young minister, do not mortgage your future for today, mortgage your today for your future. After my pastor passed, on his thanksgiving memorial service, my spiritual mother gave me the privilege of delivering the sermon that Sunday morning. I can remember very vividly that we had great and distinguished personalities in that memorial service and I was sitting next to a very well respected former president of Nigeria. Just before I climbed the stage to preach, another young minister and brother of mine whispered in my ears and said, pastor Yinka, this is the platform to show yourself and make yourself great’. As I went up the stage with the microphone in my hand, I discovered that the platform for my greatness was not in preaching in his memorial service before all the great dignitaries but was in serving him in the secret place where only God saw. Immediately I got up the stage, I called on a more senior minister of the gospel, Rev Joe Olaiya and gave him the honor of preaching in my place. Dearly beloved, your greatness in ministry is not in what men see, but in what God sees secretly and rewards openly. My dear friend, I greatly desire to mentor and impact this generation with the true knowledge of Christ, may the Lord bless you as you help share this truth.
