100 years ago TODAY. On November 7th, 1920, in strictest secrecy, four unidentified British bodies were exhumed from temporary battlefield cemeteries at Ypres,... Arras, the Asine and the Somme. None of the soldiers who did the digging were told why. The bodies were taken by field ambulance to GHQ at St-Pol-Sur-Ter Noise. Once there, the bodies were draped with the union flag. Sentries were posted and Brigadier-General Wyatt and a Colonel Gell selected one body at random. The other three were reburied. A French Honour Guard was selected and stood by the coffin overnight of the chosen soldier overnight. On the morning of the 8th November, a specially designed coffin made of oak from the grounds of Hampton Court arrived and the Unknown Warrior was placed inside. On top was placed a crusaders sword and a shield on which was inscribed: "A British Warrior who fell in the GREAT WAR 1914-1918 for King and Country". On the 9th of November, the Unknown Warrior was taken by horse-drawn carriage through Guards of Honour and the sound of tolling bells and bugle calls to the quayside. There, he was saluted by Marechal Foche and loaded onto HMS Verdon bound for Dover. The coffin stood on the deck covered in wreaths, surrounded by the French Honour Guard. Upon arrival at Dover, the Unknown Warrior was met with a nineteen gun salute - something that was normally only reserved for Field Marshals. A special train had been arranged and he was then conveyed to Victoria Station, London. He remained there overnight, and, on the morning of the 11th of November, he was finally taken to Westminster Abbey. The idea of the unknown warrior was thought of by a Padre called David Railton who had served on the front line during the Great War the union flag he had used as an altar cloth whilst at the front, was the one that had been draped over the coffin. It was his intention that all of the relatives of the 517,773 combatants whose bodies had not been identified could believe that the Unknown Warrior could very well be their lost husband, father, brother or son... THIS is the reason we wear poppies. We do not glorify war. We remember - with humility - the great and the ultimate sacrifices that were made, not just in this war, but in every war and conflict where our service personnel have fought - to ensure the liberty and freedoms that we now take for granted. Every year, on the 11th of November, we remember. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

It would be a great favour to us, and huge support for our small business if community members could use utilize the lower parking as much as possible when enjoying the sliding hill. As a public parking lot, all we can do is ask nicely. This small change supports us in a big way - thank you!

We absolutely love our location in the park and being next to the perfect sliding hill for your family! It would be a great favour to us, and huge support for our small business if community members could use utilize the lower parking as much as possible when enjoying the sliding hill. ... The small public parking lot next to our restaurant fills quickly, and when the lot is full people assume the restaurant is also full (which is usually not the case). In times like these, especially over the winter months, we need the communities help and support to get keep our restaurant accessible for guests to visit. This weekend especially, we have a ticketed Santa at the Snye charity event. We will have may families with small children visiting through the weekend. With your help, we are hoping to do everything we can to make it a magical experience for the children and help Santa raise funds for the Fort Chipewyan Food Drive. I don’t know about you, but our ideal magical experience does not include carrying kids from the far parking lot on the other side of the playground. As a public parking lot, all we can do is ask nicely. This small change supports us in a big way - thank you!

Edit to Add: Surekha’s remains OPEN for dine-in and take-out. But the shock value of this post is real - we will continue see more of our small business’ closing doors unless we stick together and stand up for ourselves! Fort McMurray,... Our Council members for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo are in the process of reviewing and approving the approximately $568 million, 2021 budget for our Region. Some small businesses are going through extremely difficult financial times. I submitted the following letter to Council today. If you are interested in supporting me in this endeavor and future requests, please forward an email to [email protected], AND reach out to the individual members of Council directly. Please SHARE and help us to reach as many local business owners as possible, we are in this together Thank you. Council for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo 9909 Franklin Avenue Fort McMurray, AB T9H 2K4 With Respect to all Members of Council, Request for Small Business Grant Funding 2021 Budget Review and Approval We are in unprecedented pandemic times. The federal and provincial government assistance provided for small businesses impacted by Covid-19 is not adequate for enduring and surviving the revenue loss and extra expenses related to the pandemic. Please take a bold step forward for our region and create a grant program at the municipal government level for all small businesses in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, to be effective and available January 1, 2021. To be clear, the request is not for a loan or cost share program. Small businesses do not have the funds to participate in such an endeavor at this time. The ask is for grant assistance. Small business is an integral part of our community. In these challenging times, we need help. As leaders and policy makers, your ability to aid by allocating funding in the 2021 budget is essential. Your consideration is appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely, Surekha Kanzig Surekha Kanzig Owner Surekha’s on the Snye -

This!! If you are healthy and financial able to - please dine in and support our restaurants and employees! On Tuesday we only had two customers from 3:00pm until 9:00pm, we call that a money losing day when we don’t even make enough revenue to cover the rent and staff to be open for the day. This season so many of us depend on Christmas parties to get us through the slower industry months (Jan-March)...But now there are virtually no Christmas parties ... How many other local restaurants in the same boat? How many money losing days can you float until there’s nothing left? Please tag some of your favorite local restaurant and your favorite food they serve! Let’s get out and make a difference in Fort McMurray by putting our money where our mouth is - litterally! - Kallie
