Yesterday, along with one of our media partners, VF&RS demonstrated how quickly an errant cigarette could ignite the dry vegetation that is everywhere in Vancou...ver right now. It took no more than a lit cigarette tossed into dry grass to almost instantly start a fire. Not only was the fire almost instant, but the rate at which it spread was astonishing: in just under a minute, the fire had spread over 4 meters and was gaining momentum as the leading edge grew in size. Before tossing a cigarette or using something with a hot exhaust (pressure washer, generator), consider how quickly a fire could spread, and what structures or green spaces might be adjacent. A fire in a planter might not seem like a big issue, but it could quickly involve a fence, house or other combustible structure. Consider too the resources that need to be committed to completely preventable fires; resources that could be pulled away from critical medial incidents or other life saving interventions. It will take all partners within our community to prevent brush- and wildfires. Please do your part and help us keep Vancouver safe and green. See more
