On a secret path A wonderful photo of Gord Downie taken on this day, October 18th, 2016 while out on the Onakawana River in Moosonee by Pam Tozer ~ Yesterda...y also marked the beginning of Secret Path Week. During Gord’s last year he worked passionately on bringing the story of Chanie Wenjack and residential schools to light in Canada. Along with both the Downie and Wenjack family Gord had a vision of what he’d like to be his legacy work. This week October 17th to the 22nd is Secret Path Week which is a week set aside as a national movement to commemorate the legacies of Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack. The dates have been chosen to honour them both on the days they joined the spirit world. Gord Downie - October 17th Chanie Wenjack - October 22nd. The intention of the week is to put out a call to all Canadians to answer Gord Downie’s call to action, to Do Something. To check out their events calendar go to: >> https://downiewenjack.ca/our-work/secret-path-week/ To donate directly to Downie Wenjack go to: >> https://downiewenjack.ca/support-us/ways-to-give/ (Photo by Pam Tozer)

"To become a country, and truly call ourselves Canada, it means we must become one. We must walk down a path of reconciliation from now on. Together, forever." - Gord Downie (February 6, 1964-October 17, 2017)

As I write this, I do so with great pride and faith in the future. As the original co founder of Surrey Pride, I want to thank all those who from day 1 were supportive. 20 years later, I was asked to come back, take the Presidency and present a vision for the 20th Anniversary Festival. It was the most centrally located Pride, the most attended in person Pride, thanks to the some 3000 people who attended. We had hoped to harness from the attendance to launch us to new heights ...in 2020. Unfortunately Covid had other plans in place. We had to go virtual or not a all. We had no clue how to present a professional virtual event. Then came the murder of George Floyd and the onset of social justice protests. Another issue that we had to handle and we did. So I want to thank everyone that followed the vision in 1999, and slingshot it through 2020. I only want to wish the best of success to the incoming board of directors as they face the challenge of presenting Pride in extraordinarily challenging times. Thank you for your service. Please welcome the incoming Board of Surrey Pride Society President Kile Brown Vice President Mark Picasso Secretary Daren Wait Treasurer Morgan Montroy Member at Large Kerry Winch Member at Large VuuDoo VanGyna Member at Large Alexis Gaile Ellis We wish you all the best Martin Rooney Past President of Surrey Pride Society

These opportunities are ideal for those who aspire to make a real impact in shaping a more just and equitable community. The four full-time positions are funded through the federal Canada Summer Jobs program and run until early March, 2021. The positions pay between $...22.40 and $23.94 (commensurate with experience and education). Eligible staff must be thirty years of age or younger at the time of employment. Deadline for applications is Friday, September 4, 2020; or until suitable candidates are identified and secured.
