This week, let's meet Rotary Club of Sussex member, Alaina Lockhart... Alaina was raised in Sussex and was taught from a young age that being active in your community is very important. She has been a Rotarian since 2014 when she joined to come together with fellow community leaders in service. An alumni of UNBSJ Faculty of Business, Alaina began her working career as a Human Resource Professional in the corporate world but was pulled away by her entrepreneurial spirit. O...ver the next 13 years she grew Lockhart's Weddings & Special Occasions which she eventually sold in 2017. She describes the time between then and the opening of her husband Rick's Craft Brewery, Sussex Ale Works, to that feeling you have when your kids all leave home. There was something missing not having a small business in the family. Alaina was the first women elected to serve as Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal in 2015 and during her service became a strong voice for rural communities, small business, and tourism. She currently owns a consulting firm called InCredible Insights which bundles all of her experiences as an offering to communities and organizations looking to overcome barriers to growth. She also currently serves as the Chairperson of the Multicultural Association of Sussex.

Happy New Year! Let's meet our Rotary Club of Sussex Member this week. May we introduce you to..... Shelley Vail! Shelley and her husband Malcolm (Moe) live in Berwick and she has been a proud member of Rotary since 2014. Shelley loves serving in her community and meeting new people. Since their 3 daughters have finished university, she has been able to give back, by investing in the lives of Sussex and area youth through the Rotary sponsored SRHS Interact Club and by fundraising for scholarships and Coats for Kids. Shelley loves attending the weekly Rotary meetings, especially serving as fines master (it is rumoured that always knows when somebody is hiding a loonie in their pocket). The positivity, professionalism and fun she experiences with other members is the highlight of her week!

This week - let's meet Rotary Member, Lou McNamara! Also, if you read until the end of the bio, let's see if you can guess which one of the three facts Lou stated is a lie.... My name is Lou McNamara, and I have been a member of the Rotary Club of Sussex for just about 17 years. My background is Radio Broadcasting and have been in radio media for just over 40 years, beginning with training in Toronto, Halifax, and then finally starting my actual on-air career with Humber Va...lley Broadcasting in Port Aux Basques NF, where I met my incredible wifewho puts up with me to this very day. So far so good! Presently I’m General Manager/Marketing for CJCW Radio in Sussex, joining Maritime Broadcasting Systems in 1986. In my role with CJCW Radio I have certified myself in Radio Marketing, helping local businesses grow their sales and marketing base. Assisting businesses, in whatever way I can, to increase their bottom line and contributing to their success has been the most satisfying part of my job. I’ve always said that Sussex and area is blessed to have its very own Radio Station. For those who own a business, or manage a business, I would strongly suggest joining the Rotary Club of Sussex. Since joining Sussex Rotary, and as a past President, I’ve got to know so many wonderful and kind business people with one common goal, to help our local Sussex and area, while at the same time developing their own leadership skills. With weekly lunchtime meetings I’ve found it so easy and convenient to attend. If you’re in business and would be interested in tangibly giving back to this area, I would highly recommend the Rotary Club of Sussex, where you can network with other business people, while at the same time giving back to this area. Which one is True? I once worked for CHSJ Radio in Saint John I received East Coast AAB Award for Creative Writing/Production I also received the Silver Sow Award for the morning CJCW Agricultural Report

This year, the Rotary Club of Sussex is thrilled to be assisting with the Coats for Kids 2020 campaign. Each year, we try hard to put our attention on community need. We have been working with organizations in the Sussex area to help meet the needs of children who need to stay warm this winter. We are so pleased to be able to work with the following partners this year to ensure as many children as possible will receive a winter jacket for the winter months. The partnership or...ganizations that will be working with us are: The Salvation Army The Multicultural Society of Sussex The Pregnancy Care Centre Shop with a Cop. Each organization has a specific network of children that we can support. Maybe you have a gently used coat for donation or want to purchase a new coat to donate, maybe you just want to make a financial contribution or purchase a gift card for this purpose - If the answer is yes - we want to hear from you. Starting immediately, we are accepting coats at the Salvation Army Thrift Store (138 Main Street, Sussex) or the Bank of Nova Scotia (635 Main Street) or by contacting us via Facebook so we can make arrangements for pick up. Rotarians help each other, and collectively help others. We look forward to working with our community partners on this important initiative.

This week let's meet our member.... Rhoda Wilson! Rhoda has been a Rotarian for 11 years. She joined when she was Community School Coordinator at Sussex Middle School and it blended well with the job. Presently Rhoda is the Host Coordinator in Sussex for Atlantic Education International and is involved in recruiting families to host international students. Organizing socials and activities for the students has built some amazing connections in the community and abroad. Rh...oda even visited one of her students in Brazil a couple of years ago. Rhoda grew up in Moncton and she spent a few years working as an Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director of The Moncton Hospital. Rhoda left her position there and enrolled in a Bachelor of Science Program at Mount Allison University where she graduated with a degree in Chemistry. This was followed by a year of Heart research working under the direction of Dr. William Driedzic and then by a one-year Education program offered at Mount Allison University. Rhoda worked on her third degree and graduated in 2006 from the University of Phoenix with a MAEd in Curriculum and Instruction. Rhoda moved to Sussex in 1986 to become the Chemistry teacher at Sussex Regional High School. Throughout her teaching career Rhoda taught a variety of courses; and before she retired, she was teaching technology to Grade 9 students. Rhoda is married to Town Counselor, Tim Wilson, and has two sons Samuel who is a medical student at McGill University and Izaak who just graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
