You cannot share them anymore. A lifetime of inside jokes and remember whens and theres that place that.... They start to leave your tongue and you swallow them, quiet again. The first time you saw your babies. The place you did that thing where you laughed and you cried. The time... you got lost in the rain and fought and then made up. You become two silent people holding the same past, but it can no longer be spread out across your palms to be shared. I have tried. But you quickly learn that people are uncomfortable with this. Like sharing these things makes your past contagious or that you long for something. We value longevity over happiness. How many years? People dont want to see broken. I see it in their faces when I explain why my boys are not with me when its not my week. The darting of eyes, the fear of the brokenness. The way I want to sit with them and tell them my story. About how being broken made me whole. How I am not ashamed of those memories, those nights in the dark that made me who I am. That brought me here. Can I tell you the memories sometime? Theyre not broken. Im not broken. Our family is not broken. Bill 28, the Family Statutes Amendment Act, 2018 is now in effect. Previously Adult Interdependent Partners (more commonly known as common law couples) were not governed by legislation in the same way married couples were with respect to how property is divided upon relationship breakdown.
