ESSENTIAL SKILLS Subcommittee Report IA AGM 2016/17 In November of 2016, the Essential Skills Subcommittee contracted with Industry Training and Employment Services Manitoba to organize a Career Event under the banner STEPPING STONES TO SUCCESS. The intent of this event was to bring together local employer with local job seekers and potential job seekers of the future. Up until the past fiscal year this type of event has been the major role of this subcommittee . The E...SS (Essential Skills Subcommittee) was established when local industry representatives brought to attention the concern that applicants for employment lacked some of the basic essential skills required to perform the duties of the jobs offered locally. Although their skills were listed on paper in practicality many seemed to be deficient. At this time Workplace Education Manitoba was contracting with Manitoba Education to provide services in Assessment and Upskilling for both job seekers as-well-as employers. The local WEST (Workplace Education Skills Training) Ctre was established and has been offering services since. The West Ctre is an enhancement for the myriad of current services available within the community and is a welcome addition. The ESS subcommittee is a partnership with several local, related organizations including Industry, Swan Valley School Division, Prairie Mountain Health, Swan Valley Chamber of Commerce as-well-as Elbert Chartrand Friendship Ctre. The Brand of this committee is Stepping StonES to Success which is the banner under which events have been regularly held. Over the year 2016/17, the subcommittee held 6 regular meetings. The purpose of these meetings was to plan an event and to set goals for future involvements to meet the mandate. Then in mid-November, Stepping StonES 2016 was held. Close to 40 agencies/organizations had booths advertising services and opportunities for the over 200 attendees. For 2017/18 the focus will change slightly due to budget considerations and will involve a community survey. This survey is currently under development and will determine educational needs within the community. The survey will be somewhat modelled after the survey conducted by Service Canada/Brandon University in 2010. It will focus primarily on adult training, both skill training and developmental upskilling. Once the results of the survey have been collected and tabulated, goals will be developed as to implementation of any recommendations forthcoming. These statistics will be useful for future planning locally and will be available to the public for proposal development as-well-as general information. While the mandate of ESS Subcommittee remains the same the delivery methodology of its projects and events will likely change due to the changes in funding. While this change has an impact on process the goal is to continue to provide meaningful service to the client/employer community. Respectfully submitted Jack Dyck See more
