Again, we find ourselves at a crossroads. We are about to go into lockdown (again) and because I’m laid off (again) I’ve had some time to think. So if you hav...e a few minutes please take time to read. Small businesses are struggling to stay open and are upset that big box stores are allowed to stay open even if not selling essential items. Small businesses aren’t even contributing (in this area) to the numbers of Covid exposure yet are being forced to close. Completely frustrating right? Absolutely. Can we strip this issue down like an onion though? Offering some perspective. We can blame the government until the day we die. We know they’re corrupt. Right down to the small town mayors, but let’s go past that because that’s another topic for another day. Society as a whole has ate out of the palm of corporations because the corporations recognize that we thrive better when we can get everything we need in a one stop shop (aka big box stores) Society doesn’t want to be inconvenienced by having to go to the local bakery to pick up bread, or go to the local hardware store to pick up lightbulbs, or support the local wine makers when we can just go to Walmart or Zehrs to get all of the above. We were blind to the corporate money making agenda. So because we can’t hold corruption accountable, maybe I can offer some perspective; which- will require an open mind and willingness to hold ourselves accountable. So here it goes. We need to be HONEST about why small business are failing and be accountable and recognize that we allowed it to get to this point- we became so blinded by convenience that we screwed ourselves over before we even realized it. Maybe now that we’ve realized it we can change our behaviours and start shopping local? Don’t hold your breath. We’ve become so addicted to the convenience of shopping at Walmart or Sobeys or Target that the small businesses never stood a chance because society is evolving into a convenience based business and are catering to the busy families. Local businesses got a small taste of success when money overflowed but now that reality is smacking us right in the face we’re pissed and looking for someone to blame. The government, the big box stores, the statistics, the health system and ministry. We need to take a minute and be honest. Our wants override our needs. Our society has evolved to a comparison ran, greedy, unhappy group of materialistic entitled people. But the good news is that we can change that. But it has to be ASAP If you really want to help local, you gotta realize... that Johnny doesn’t want a pair of skates and Suzy doesn’t wants a dolly. Johnny now wants an XBox and Suzy wants an LOL doll which you can only buy at.... guess where? Maybe we need to re-prioritize our wants and recognize that right now we have to live based on needs. If you wanna support local, go to a local toy store and later explain to Johnny why XBox isn’t essential and why an LOL doll isn’t essential for Suzy. Maybe we hold ourselves to higher standards as citizens, parents , friends and family’s even HUMANS and be more compassionate and realize that we don’t have to buy box store items for acceptance or attention. A simple gesture is enough. Shop local. Brother is hard to buy for but you know he loves coffee? Instead of going to Starbucks , how about local coffee shop Red Lantern Coffee Co.? Sister in law is about herself? Buy a hand made picture frame from a local gift store Cindys Home and Garden so she can put her own picture in it. Cousin likes to work out? Check out locally owned gym Howe Fit and pick up some protein powder or shaker cups. Mom works hard and doesn’t want acknowledgment? Acknowledge her anyway and support a locally owned flower shop New Designs Flowers & Gifts. It’s literally that simple. Supporting local, thinking outside the (big) box (store) and stop looking at supporting local as an inconvenience. It’s a choice to shop local or big box. But I hope you choose to support local in these times considering the results are not in local favour. Going to comment that it’s cheaper at a big box store? ... while that corporate owner is on its 4th summer home, maybe the small town business has to charge a little more just to put some supper on the table or to keep its lights on. With all this being said, please don’t comment to debate. The purpose of this post is to offer perspective and also for you to share this post and tag ANY AND ALL LOCAL BUSINESSES IN WINDSOR ESSEX COUNTY to advertise for them and show some support.
