Hello to all our valued friends and followers. I will warn you that this is a bit of a long post, but we are extremely excited about the news! We want to tell you all about the findings from an independent study conducted by Albert Sey. He is a graduate student from Memorial University's Environmental Science program at their Grenfell Campus. He published an article in the Journal of Advanced Research this month on Newfoundland canola oil. It is a great read, interesting and ...very informative. A link to his paper can be found here : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jare.2020.05.002 A few key points to take away from the article are: - The percentage of omega-3 fatty acids in NL canola oil surpassed the average omega3 content in all canola oil previously reported GLOBALLY!! - Diets in western cultures tend to be low in omega3 fatty acids which is a risk factor in poor fetal brain development, cardiovascular disease (CVD), immune response and inflammation-based illnesses. The increased level of omega3 fatty acids of canola grown in boreal climatic conditions such as Newfoundland, could be uniquely helpful in improving heart or brain health and boosting the immune system. Other studies suggest, daily consumption of omega3 could improve the amount of calcium in the body and reduce the risk of osteoporosis - The presence of a unique form of triglyceride (monoacetyldiacylglycerol or MAcDg) was reported for the first time in canola cultivated in boreal climate, and has the potential to reduce the risk of obesity and other health related diseases. It also has the potential to suppress tumor growth, and treating inflammation-based illnesses such as sepsis, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. - NL canola oil contains some of the highest amounts of phytosterols. Phytosterols are known to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, have been reported to be effective in reducing the number of tumors in colon cancer, as well as lowering plasma low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels; reducing the risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. We could not be more pleased with these findings. We always knew that we were producing a superior product at a benefit to all who enjoy it. As always, you can find this oil in Coleman’s grocery stores across the island or you can contact us directly through our Facebook page. Please like and share to support local farmers.
