Today finally marks the end of Covid-19 restrictions on dental care in Nova Scotia. Regular services will resume at the clinic on Monday! . Now, more than ever, I am SO grateful for the support of our community. Thank you so much for welcoming us back into the workforce and for showing appreciation for your oral health care team . And there is so much else to be thankful for this weekend: my amazing team at work; gathering with friends again; our first wedding annivers...ary, the love and support of our families (happy Fathers Day Dad and Shaun!!); and warm summer sunshine on Cape Breton Island! . My heart is glowing . I cant think of a more delightful way to celebrate than a sunset and an amazing local cider @islandfolkciderhouse See more
A sneak peak at our new normal
Dental offices in Nova Scotia will be authorized starting June 5 to provide emergency and urgent dental treatment in their clinics. While dental offices have al...ways followed strict infection control guidelines, they will be following additional protocols identified by the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia and in collaboration with Public Health. Whats the difference between emergency, urgent, and non-urgent dental treatment? Dental emergency: potentially life-threatening conditions which require immediate treatment. Urgent dental care: conditions that require immediate attention to relieve severe pain and/or risk of infection. Non-urgent dental care: includes regular check-ups and hygiene appointments and are not to be performed until June 19. Dentists will be able to provide all dental procedures starting on June 19. For more information, call your family dentist.

Regular services will resume June 22nd! To everyone whose appointments weve had to cancel as a result of Covid-19, and everyone Ive spoken with over the past 12 weeks - We will be contacting you to schedule an appointment. It may take a few weeks to get in contact with everyone. We truly appreciate your patience. If you have questions, urgent needs, or if youd like to book an appointment, please call us at 902-539-6577 Our team has been working hard this week learning new protocols and preparing our clinic for your return! I will be sharing a glimpse into our new normal sometime soon, so stay tuned for that. Looking forward to seeing you all soon! Dr. Steph

A helpful post shared by the NS government: Its essential that we make time for moments of peace We are still not sure when dental offices in Nova Scotia will open. Until then, be safe and be well. Thinking of you all!! ... . For dental emergencies > 902-539-6577
Hi Everyone, Im posting this with hopes that it will be read and shared widely. As many of you already know, dental offices in Nova Scotia have been instructed to close. One emergency dental clinic has been established in Cape Breton so you continue to have access to care; but the services available are limited. For the most part, treatment performed at the emergency clinic be removal of teeth that can no longer be maintained due to pain, infection, or trauma.... I know you may be feeling frustrated or scared, but I assure you this protocol is all about keeping our community safe and healthy. Its about physical distancing. And most importantly, its about ensuring that valuable personal protective equipment is conserved for life-saving moments when it is needed most. Thats why its SUPER important that we all do our part to practice self-care and #staytheblazeshome ! Keep these oral health tips in mind and remember: We should not take our teeth for granted. They are more delicate than you think! Be safe and be well, Dr Stephanie Hillier . . . Questions? -- Reach out to us via the Sydney Family Dental Centre facebook page or by leaving a voicemail at 902-539-6577. We are here to help! #workfromhome #covidcare #smiles #oralhealth #selfcare #wellness #dentistry #sydneynovascotia #downtownsydneyns #novascotia #capebreton #capebretonisland
Important information is starting to circulate in the media. Two important things to remember: 1. You MUST reach out to us first. We will assess your case by phone and either treat your case with medications or refer your case to an emergency clinic, as needed. (902-539-6577)... 2. The Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia and Dalhousies Faculty of Dentistry have done a tremendous amount of work to ensure that all Nova Scotians have access to safe evidence-based treatments at the standard of care that youre used to and that you deserve.
To our valued patients and the Cape Breton community, Effective March 31, the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia requires that emergency dental treatments be provided at designated Emergency Dental Clinics only. If you are having a dental emergency, please continue to call the clinic at 902-539-6577. Its very important that you leave both your name and contact information on the voicemail. Dr. Stephanie Hillier will return your call promptly to assess your case and an...swer your questions. She will be responsible for referrals to an emergency dental clinic where necessary. Please know your team at Sydney Family Dental Centre will continue to work hard for you behind the scenes. Do not hesitate to ask for our help. We are all in this together!!
COVID - 19 UPDATE: Effective March 21st, the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Nova Scotia, Dr. Robert Strang, prohibited dentists from engaging in the practice of dentistry, except where it is necessary to perform an emergency dental procedure. As always, the health of our patients, our loved ones, and our community will be our absolute priority.

Thanks for everything you do
Dont let fear hold you back!! Believe it or not, but MOST adults feel some anxiety about visiting the dentist. We totally understand. It can feel very vulnerable to open your heart and your mouth for your dental care team. But with a little courage, I think you will feel relieved knowing you took the first step towards a healthier mouth and a brighter smile and it wasnt as bad as you thought!
11 AM UPDATE: The clinic will remain closed for the remainder of the day. Anyone affected will be contacted tomorrow to reschedule. ... If you have concerns, please feel free to leave a message at [email protected] or 902-539-6577. ------ We will be closed this morning due to road conditions. I will post an update at 11:30!
Always carefully consider the mechanism of tooth whitening for the products you choose. Abrasive whitening methods should be used only occasionally and with caution. Thinning of the enamel will eventually leave teeth with a flat and yellow appearance. And charcoal deposits in the pores of the teeth can leave them looking grey! If you need advice from your dental care team, you know where to find us! ... 627 George Street, Sydney.
Summer in Cape Breton is really heating up! Many of us will reach for iced coffees and cold lemonades to celebrate the season. But remember - sipping beverages other than water over long periods of time can lead to tooth decay. Our advice: Enjoy your cold treats! But choose to have them with meals or during breaks instead of sipping at your desk; limit added sugars; and drink lots of water!!
Several of our team members have participated in the Under One Umbrella events. Thats Dr McCarvill in the photo! Thank you to the organizers and volunteers who work very hard to make this program a reality!
If you brush and brush and still get cavities, it might be your technique. Here are some helpful tips to optimize your oral health! Additionally, we recommend brushing for at least two full minutes twice per day and using a fluoridated toothpaste.

Do you grind your teeth? Wearing a night guard, or biteplane, while you sleep can protect your teeth from damage, preventing wear, gum recession, and sensitivity!

Today Anna Maria Tremonti hosted a special edition of CBCs The Current. The focus was on teeth! Most importantly, interviewees spoke about how oral health is connected to the rest of our bodies and the barriers many Canadians face when it comes to access to dental care. Lack of appropriate treatment can have devastating effects. One woman describes recurrent episodes of dental pain as, "You feel like youre being tortured every time it happens, and theres nothing you ...can do about it. All you have to do is take it." The episode also touched on where cavities come from, the evolution of our teeth and jaws, and the history of dentistry. http://www.cbc.ca//filling-in-the-gaps-dental-care-in-cana
HALLOWEEN is fast approaching. How exciting! Here are a few simple tips to help your kids avoid tooth decay but still enjoy the treats theyve earned: 1. Dont allow grazing throughout the day.... Have a few treats as dessert after meals and then put the treat bag away. 2. Limit exposure to sticky treats. Caramel, toffee, gummies, and even dried fruits like raisins! 3. Remember to clean up afterwards! Brush with fluoridated toothpaste and floss between teeth.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
