Behold...the earliest life!!!! Here we see a polished stromatolite sphere from Madagascar ! Stromatolites are the ancient microbial mat of Cyanobacteria that created an ahesive to cement themselves to sand, stone and other bacteria. These are the very first life that appeared on Earth over 3 billion years ago; this specimen is 600 million years old. #sydneyodditorium #weirdsydneyns #stromatalite #earlylife #capebreton #novascotia

Same stone, different light! Under visible light (ROYGBIV) rubies look a muted reddish colour; under long wave ultraviolet light, the rubies fluoresce a beautiful vivid red! There’s a hidden and stunning world that lies just behind what we see. #sydneyodditorium #weirdsydneyns #rubies #corundrum #uvminerals #hiddenworlds #beyondvisiblelight #capebreton #novascotia

Don’t be fooled by the simple black colour, Shungite, originally found in the 1870’s near the village of Shunga, Russia . Shungite is rare in terms of its makeup which is staggering 98-100% pure carbon and some contain rare fullerenes! Flyer end were first created in labs but later found to exist in nature in places as lightning discharges and soot in fires and strangely enough in shungite! #sydneyodditorium #weirdsydneyns #shungite #carbonheavy #rare #sydneynovascotia #capebreton #capebretonisland #novascotia

A tribute to the micro machine guy and a quick demonstration of quantum mechanics at work! Phosphorescence takes the radiation (in this case the powerful UV light) and slowly releases it! Is it science? Is it magic? Yes is the answer! #sydneyodditorium #weirdsydneyns #quantummechanics #spooky #glowy #magicandscience #sydneynovascotia #capebreton #capebretonisland #novascotia

Cool piece of Russian space history! Space dogs, Vererok (light breeze) and Ugolyok (ember) launched into space on February 22, 1966 on board Cosmos 110. These pups spent 21 days in orbit which held as the longest duration flight until 1971. It is still the longest space flight by dogs. These pins were made by the Russian government and sent to schools across the country in hopes to spark I trest in the space program. #sydneyodditorium #weirdsydneyns #spacehistory #sydneynovascotia #capebreton #capebretonisland #novascotia
