What is laser dentistry? Laser dentistry refers to dental procedures that alter or remove small amounts of tissue. At Sylvan Lake Dental, we use this laser to help with gum reshaping, muscle attachment, removing oral tumors, treating cold sores, overcoming sleep apnea, and more. There are two forms of lasers that are used in dentistry: hard tissue lasers and soft tissue lasers. Hard tissue lasers are used mostly for teeth, as it is a tougher substance to work on. This form of... laser cuts into the teeth with precision, which can help with cavities, tooth sensitivity, or prepping for dental fillings. Whereas soft tissue laser is used mostly for gums, as they are softer to work on. This form of laser cuts into soft tissue to help with lengthening crowns, reshaping gums, and removing tissue that restricts the movement of the mouth. By using laser dentistry for certain treatments or procedures, it can help minimize the use of anesthetic, help recovery time, and ease most physical discomfort. What to Expect at Your Next Dental Cleaning... With the end of the year near, it is important to get your teeth cleaned by our team before starting the start of 2021. We want to explain the process of what happens during a cleaning to help ease any dental anxiety you may be feeling in a step-by-step process: 1. A physical exam will take place, which is when a dental hygienist uses a small mirror to check your teeth and gums for any signs of irregularity... 2. After the exam, the dental hygienist will use a scaler to remove plaque and tarter that may have started to build on the teeth or on the gum lines 3. After the removal of plaque and tartar, the hygienist will use a high-tech electric toothbrush to remove any extra tartar and clean your teeth with a gritty toothpaste 4. You will then be required to rinse out your mouth from the gritty toothpaste the hygienist used 5. The last step is having a hygienist apply a fluoride treatment to help with the cleaning process and protection of the teeth 6. You are all done cleaning! Now that you understand the process, schedule your appointment to get your teeth cleaned! Call us at (403) 887-2780 or email us at [email protected] to schedule an appointment

Do you have tooth sensitivity? Our teeth are made up of different layers that help them stay protected, however, these layers become damaged due to lack of proper hygiene. When enamel wears away and exposes dentin, temperatures will start to cause the nerves to become sensitive. There are some remedies that can help, but we do suggest visiting the dentist to ensure that tooth sensitivity doesn’t cause further damage to your smile. Some treatments that we can suggest if you ...are having minor teeth sensitivity are: Using a fluoride-based toothpaste to help ease pain from sensitivity Switching to a soft bristle toothbrush because hard bristles may be aggravating your teeth and gums Avoiding foods that are high in acid, such as citrus, carbonated drinks, and coffee If you find that your teeth sensitivity is becoming unbearable, contact us today - We can help relieve the sensitivity. Foods That Brighten Tooth Enamel? Yes, please! Maintaining a healthy diet can actually help you achieve a visibly brighter smile. We know dark food and drinks like coffee, red wine, and berries can stain your teeth - But, there are some foods that we recommend you eat, to contribute to the brightness and strength of your enamel: Cheese... Yogurt Delicious Greens Apples Carrots Almonds Your tooth enamel helps protect your teeth from decay. Eating foods that are harsh or high in acidity can begin to wear down that enamel - making your teeth look discoloured and be susceptible to damage.
