Very well said

Too many people in the dog world have become convinced that only big dogs can be powerful and that only deep, full mouth bites are effective and damaging. The truth is that neither of these beliefs are accurate. Below is the results of a protection training session with Miko a fully trained Personal Protection K9. Miko is @ 45 pounds of dynamite and is criticized by many as shallow biting, using her canines instead of full mouth bites, and reversing (letting go and r...e-engaging in multiple locations). As you can see, her methods are not only effective in fighting and controlling an aggressor, they are also quite damaging (this picture is of a leg that Mikos bites penetrated the bite suit, not only creating deep bruising and muscle injury, but even broke skin at times). Remember... sometimes what is accepted as truth is little more than a fallacy thats been told and repeated so often, by so many, that the lie is accepted as the truth. Accept and believe nothing... question everything.

These days it seems like all the PD trainers want to show you are videos of bite-work... trying to impress the public who doesnt understand what theyre seeing, or how theyre being deceived. I like to see these dogs doing stability and control work... any dog can bite, but not every dog can be stable and controlled. Heres two examples of control... 8 trained working dogs all being controlled by just 1 handler.

I would never send my dog, and leave him behind... I just couldnt do that. I heard this while observing another trainers class last night. I get it... we form a special bond with our dogs and to send one INTO danger knowing they could be injured or killed is a very difficult thing. BUT, if you say you want a protection dog and believe youre training this, then you need to seriously think about what protection means, to you. If you wont send your dog because it could... get hurt... or you wont use the sending of the dog to facilitate your own escape and survival, then honestly you dont have, or want, a protection dog. That kind of mentality suggests that the dog isnt there to protect you... you are there to protect the dog. Think about it. I see people training their dogs and striving to get their dog to commit to the bite... but are you as committed as your dog? Are you willing to use and lose the dog in order to save your own life?

What does Protection Dog mean to you? Ask three people what protection or Protection Dog means to them and youll get three different answers. Ask 10 people and youll have 10 different descriptions. Truth be told very few of the people I ask this question have every really thought about it. They just assume its a predefined thing... a clearly understood role... but its not. It means something different to each of us, because our concerns, fears, insecurities and live...s differ from person to person. What you need isnt necessarily what I need, or what the next guy/gal needs. How can you expect a dog to do a job if you havent first clearly defined the job? Step #1 is always to define needs and expectations... this means a long hard analysis of what protection means TO YOU!

I couldnt help but share this post... so much valuable information. Applicable to developing Personal Protection dogs just as much as stockyard dogs... Ericsson Stockdogs: I think that the intention of this video has been misunderstood. We are NOT attempting to demonstrate what we can do as a handler. This is a simple test of the dogs natural instinct. And to be able to evaluate the dog correctly we try to influence as little as possible until the stock is gathered. Thus,... exposing said instinct. Truth of the matter is that the first dog actually has way more experience and knows multiple commands, but chooses to abandon any obedience while she chases the stock. Notice, she never did gather the stock to the handler. Had she done this she would have been rewarded with extended time to work. As you can see, she is working strictly for herself with zero regard for the handler or the safety of the stock. Clearly, that is not an attribute that we would want to continue breeding into our working dogs. The second dog, the puppy, worked very well. She didnt rush at the stock and she worked the flanks evenly until the stock came to the handler. She even made made full rounds to help contain the stock that they wouldnt flee past the handler. She has no idea what "there" means, she is just paying attention to the handler and the tone in his voice each time she comes to "balance". Her INSTINCT is what is making her stop at that point. Agreed that many things can be taught to a dog, but teaching will never outweigh natural instinct when it really matters. Any professional who uses working dogs, and actually relies on these dogs as a partner and helper, will run tests to see what the dogs character and instinct tells them. They do this because they have enough experience, good and bad, to realize that breeding is very important and plays a huge role in the dogs ability. They also understand how rare it is to find a rescue dog from the shelter that can do the job as efficiently as a dog with decades of selective breeding specifically for that job. And teaching a dog a proper recall will absolutely never help the dog "gather" more efficiently. The puppy has no recall either, but is willing to come to the handler because it wants to please and is not working for her own satisfaction only. Remember, she is just a puppy so obviously she is not going to be expert on her commands even if she had been worked more often. Also, both dogs are working in the same pasture, just at opposite ends. Also, the first dog had a huge advantage because the sheep were bedded and relaxed when she got to work, the puppy got her chance when the sheep had been stirred up and become eager to flee. https://www.facebook.com/Ericsson.stockd//664083587095810/

Nice work by Rich, Mike and Fortress K9...

No flying leaps, no showbiz, just solid effective protection work. The handler escapes, the dog survives... win win

Just as applicable to protection dogs... If its stupid and it works, it isnt stupid https://www.facebook.com/tango.herzog/posts/745969835613563

I saw this today and immediately thought: This is as true for dogs and dog training as it is for children. Stop teaching dogs memorized routines (tricks)... instead teach them to think and problem solve.

Several people made me aware that Ellen Nickelsbergs website is gone, and with it her Manfred Heyne articles. Very unfortunate as this was a wealth of solid, prized, "old time" GSD knowledge. I have all that material and Ive uploaded and posted it on our M&P Tactical K9 website... http://tacticalk9.ca... Just follow the link to Herding - Manfred Heynes articles

For those who think that combat tracking is a "new" skill set, think again. I have had the privelege of hearing many details about what the Germans did with their dog programs during WWII, and I knew that there was a rather secret American program, during the Vietnam War, involving combat tracking and dogs... but recently I had the privelege of connecting with someone who was part of that program 40+ years ago and who continues to utilize those skills today. The linked article is a very interesting read... http://www.historynet.com/combat-tracker-teams-dodging-an-e
