HAPPY NEW YEAR! Although fireworks are being cancelled in most cities in Alberta tonight, there are some of us that will still experience them in our neighbourhoods. As some of you know, Grizz has a fear of fireworks and thunderstorms, and he shakes and hides during these events. It's very heartbreaking. ... We used the Calming CannaBiscuit treats on Christmas day during fireworks and they helped! He was still aware of the sounds, but he was still interested in food which was a good sign! If your dog is scared and seeks comfort from you during a storm or during fireworks, you can feel free to offer your support to them without worrying about encouraging or reinforcing their fear. As animal behaviourist Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. says in the article attached: "Fear is designed to be aversive, that’s why it is an effective way of affecting behaviour and keeping animals out of trouble when they encounter something that might hurt them. Fear is aversive enough that no amount of petting or sweet talk is going to make your dog more likely to shiver and shake when she hears thunder rolling as the clouds billow and the rains begin." So, I’d like to remind you of a few things to put your mind at ease. 1. We are an ESSENTIAL business. We feed your pets. We will not be shut down. We know this year has been full of surprises, and the worst possible scenario we might foresee is curb-side ...only. BUT, we've done that before and we all got by just fine! 2. Our safety protocols have been in place for months and of course will continue. We feel very comfortable in our workplace, and invite you in to shop. However, if you feel uncomfortable coming in, please consider calling in your order. Or, take advantage of Copperfield's curb-side website: www.tailblazerscopperfield.com. Is it better for our business and location to receive your business - YES. However, it's important to us that you feel comfortable and it does benefit us indirectly when you support our sister business! Please use the phone number your account is under in-store to take advantage of any frequent buyer benefits when you shop online. Please also be prepared to get a call back if you call in a curb-side order and we're with a customer. We appreciate your patience. HOT TIP: You can use this site to do some browsing and call in your shopping list to our store if you like. We don't have 100% of the same products, but we do share a large majority. 3. Our suppliers are all considered essential businesses. They will not be shut down. Many of our foods come from eastern Ontario where they’ve had shutdowns for a while, and we’re still receiving stock from them. HOARDING is the biggest reason for supply chain distributions. Please don’t be that person. I enjoy having easy access to toilet paper! 4. I’ve seen too many people come in in the past few weeks on their last few cups of pet food. The best advice I can give you now, and always, is to be TWO WEEKS ahead of the end of your pet’s food supply. We are coming into the holiday season. There are higher demands on shipping services. We are now used to NOT getting our orders on time. This is the way it is now (you might not have even noticed because we've adjusted to bring you the fewest possible disruptions to your service!). So, takeaways - We aren’t going anywhere. Keep at minimum a two weeks supply of your pets' food on hand at home, hoarding is for bone heads - smart preparation is the way to go, please take advantage of our Copperfield curb-side website if you feel uncomfortable coming. I appreciate the fact that FDA’s voice is the voice veterinarians and pet owners listen to, yet too often our messages hav...e been repeated inaccurately by third parties. The result is that in the internet age of phenomenally fast sound bites, complex scientific messaging is often lost in translation. We have tried to be careful in our messaging, and we recognize going forward not to speak on this topic publicly unless we are clarifying information or have something substantive to share. If you are still being told that grains are heart healthy, and that they'll solve all taurine deficiency problems, you need to question the source of that information. We know, from experience, our clients are STILL being told this by trusted professionals despite it being debunked. "For the record, taurine comes from animal protein sources or via supplementation, not from grains, ancient grains or legumes." Of course, to keep our celebration safe, there has to be some rules: ... Please keep your shopping party to 2 people or less. It might not be the best time to bring your pup either since we won't have much room or time to visit. Please remember your mask/face covering. We'll have someone managing store traffic, but there may be wait times as we're limiting the number of people in store at once. If it's chilly, dress to stand outside. If you don't care about saving money, come before or after the weekend! If you have detailed nutrition questions or require coat and boot fittings, please come prior to the weekend to get your recommendations and sizing. I fear we'll have little time to help you out on the weekend. We cannot hold products to be purchased on the weekend, so come early! This will be a very different celebration, but we're excited to be able to offer something back to you for your endless support.
