EVACUATION ALERT An Evacuation Alert has been issued by the Cowichan Valley Regional District at the Regional Emergency Operations Centre (REOC). Heavy rainfall has resulted in localized flooding that has affected roadways and properties in the western area of Area D - Cowichan Bay. Because of the potential danger to life and health, the Cowichan Valley Regional District has issued an Evacuation Alert for the following areas: Tzouhafem Road (south). North Cowichan... Samuel Road, Cowichan Bay Westcan Terminal Road, Cowichan Bay Lochmanetz Road, Cowichan Bay Due to the closure of Tzouhalem Road north of the affected area, in the event an Evacuation Order is issued, residents will need to use Cowichan Bay Road (eastbound) or Bench Road as their evacuation route. Heavy rainfall prompts Evacuation Alert in Cowichan Bay area, impacts of localized flooding reported across entire Cowichan region Duncan, BC The Regional Emergency Operations Centre (REOC) of the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) has issued an Evacuation Alert for an area in Cowichan Bay, and advises residents across the region to be prepared in the event flood conditions worsen overnight. The Evacuation Alert includes Tzouhalem Road, Samuel Road, Westcan Terminal R...oad and Lochmanetz Road. The CVRD is aware of many other areas across the Cowichan region that continue to be impacted by localized flooding. Many residents have reported overland flow from roads or ditches at capacity. Reports of this nature should be directed to the respective road maintenance contractors for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI): Areas A, B, C, D, E, F & I: Emcon Services 1.866.353.3136 / MOTI 250.952.4515 Areas G & H: Mainroad Group 1.877.215.6006 / MOTI 250.751.3246 To aid Cowichan Valley residents experiencing flooding issues, the Municipality of North Cowichan has sandbags available. Residents are asked to call 250-746-3106 to arrange for pickup. The sandbags can be filled with sand that is located across from the public works yard at 2975 Sprott Road. The Town of Lake Cowichan is also aiding residents in this regard. Piles of sand and sand bags are available at the Town’s Public Works yard, located at the corner of Grosskleg Way and Wilson Road in Lake Cowichan. Residents may help themselves at any time, but are advised to please consider what they really need to maintain supplies for others. Residents are encouraged to check the CVRD website and social media channels over the next 24 hours for any further emergency alerts issued in the region. See more

Elaine was recently named the 2020 Rotary Alumni Global Service Award recipient and her story is presented in the December 2020 edition of the Rotary ...Magazine. Dr. Elaine Hernandez is a seasoned public health professional with experience in emergency disaster planning, infectious disease control and prevention, maternal and child health promotion, food security, and international development project design and implementation. She has served with the American Red Cross as Health Delegate to Mexico and with the Canadian Red Cross as Delegate to Honduras, and is currently the Regional Director in South Texas for the Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty. Elaine serves as the current President of the Rotary Club of Mission, the District 5930 International Service Coordinator, a member of the Rotary Foundation's Cadre of Technical Advisors, and a Board member of the new Rotary Fellowship on Global Development.
