After 30 years at 1212A Winnipeg Street, the time has come for me to close the doors on Talking Dog. I leave with many fond memories of creative collaboration, ...both with clients and with the talented team of engineers, composers, foley artists, performers and programmers I have employed over the years. I believe we have served the industry, while training many individuals on honing their craft. I had hoped that there would be a way to keep the studio open as a training facility for teens and young adults interested in screen-based media production, especially since our main room is approved by Dolby for 5.1 theatrical mixing. I have always maintained that this was an important part of the province’s film industry infrastructure and would be very costly to replace. There were promising conversations, but unfortunately nothing materialized. Talking Dog followers know that we began diversifying into Augmented and then Virtual Reality starting in 2009. The need for diversification became much greater with the massive revenue loss we saw due to the cancellation of the Film Employment Tax Credit. I was proud to be a part of growing the film and interactive industry from its grass roots and maintained an interest in training staff for the future. However, the economics no longer make sense. As such, this also means the closure of The Grid VR Arcade, the second virtual reality arcade to open in all of Canada. The Grid has developed a league of Virtual Reality fans since opening in October 2016, so while it will not be continuing operations, I would be open to discussing a purchase of the assets and proprietary functionality developed for this purpose should someone wish to carry on with this endeavor. I am grateful to the good folks at Creative Saskatchewan, without whose financial assistance we would have closed much sooner than this. Film/TV production is booming across Canada right now, and it was my hope that Saskatchewan would revive its screen-based media industry to participate in that boom. I gambled on this happening, as it has been my life’s work, but that has not come to pass. I leave proud of everything that the Talking Dog team achieved over the years. Cheers to you all! Rob
