The process of imping. Atka was a brave little soldier when we imped tail feathers today. As some of you know, Atka came to us as an adult with five broken feathers. Thanks to another very generous and helpful Ontario falconer, we were sent some replacement feathers. They aren't quite a perfect match as they came from a different bird, but at least he has a tail now! The first photo is the replacement feathers we were sent, prepared and ready for imping. We managed to a few lure passes from Piccolo today despite the snow falling. We have been really fighting the weather recently. When it has been warm, it is far too windy to fly safely, and when it's calm, it has been quite cold and difficult to motivate him. We are very pleased with how he's doing and cannot wait to have better weather to ask for longer flights with more passes. Thank you to Don for helping us film this! We will probably try testing a go-pro for next time.... Today we celebrate World Falconry Day! Falconry is one of humanity's oldest traditions and is UNESCO recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Did you know? Some of our common phrases today are believed to have originated through falconry. Day one to day eight progress for our red-tailed hawk. He's really beginning to quiet down and has come a long way in only a week! He has also begun to eat food with us in his prescence, which is a huge step as birds of prey feel vulnerable when eating. There's still a long way to go to earn his trust, but he's coming along very well. Patience is key!
