We spent another fun and chaotic day in Winnipeg over the weekend dishing out 1000s of pounds of local, organic grains, flour and oil. This was the annual grain CSA coordinated by @adagioacres! We get such satisfaction from this annual event because of the large number of individuals passionate about sourcing local, reducing packaging use and waste, and connecting farmer to foodie. There was an even large diversity of grains this year from lentils to corn meal to camelina o...il to quinoa. Huge thanks to all who supported this initiative and our small farms! #graincsa #tamarackfarms #adagioacres #lovelocal #supportlocal #winnipeg
Black einkorn. We just snuck through the narrow harvest window on Monday and Tuesday to get in the last of our crops: hemp and einkorn. Snow arrived today, but I don’t think we got as much as Winnipeg. We are thankful today, so today is my emotional Thanksgiving. Right on time.
Red River Co-op is sharing the love for local, and they let us share our story in this video. The Co-op has been a long time supporter of local: local producers, community projects and its membership. Red River Co-op carries our nutty brown quinoa, quinoa flour and quinoa pancake and muffin mix.
We have had a few rare windows of opportunity to harvest over the last week. We got a quinoa field harvested yesterday with rain expected today. With this continual wet weather, the concern slowly creeps in despite my voice of patience saying, the dry weather will come again. I heard yesterday that there stills remains several billion worth of crop in Manitoban farmers’ fields. We are about 50% complete. We strongly prefer to combine standing crop so that it dries much faster after a rain, but we require better storage with excellent drying equipment inside the bins to manage moister crop material. Costs money but drastically increases our ability to harvest our crops given our shorter growing season up on Riding Mountain.
Today is Open Farm Day here in Manitoba. We are one of many farms across the province inviting you to come for a visit from 10 am to 5 pm. You can see how we clean seed, visit a quinoa field, and visit with our pasture raised pigs. Hope to see you today!
