When we are warming up a horse, one aim is to gradually increase the range of motion, and one often used strategy is to ask the horse to lower its head from the... withers, so that the propelling hind quarters essentially "lift" the energy up and over the back of the horse. All stretching must be done keeping in mind that Number One adage about stretching---"Never force a stretch." The idea is to induce or coax the stretch, so that the horse basically stretches herself, as Carrie, working her a few days ago with Lindle Sutton, is asking from Cordi. The push still comes from behind, but the lowered head allows for an elongation of various muscle groups. My former USET coach, Jack LeGoff used to call out, in his strong French accent, "You must gymnasticize the horse."

The saddest thing I’ve ever seen Is a woman on a horse that does not believe she is good enough to be there. Do not compare yourself. There is only this mome...nt, this horse. Your hands, seat, voice and leg, define the parameters of the entire world for this horse. What anyone else is doing, or has ever done, does NOT matter. Whomever it is that you look up to or feel less than Is in turn, looking up to another rider, wishing to aspire to that level. So be content where you are You are blessed! YOU are your only competition Just be better today than you were yesterday. Try hard for this horse you ride and try hard for yourself. Most of all, enjoy this time; Every moment. Every stride. Every cue that is answered with a response. Cherish this partnership Know, that you are exactly where you are supposed to be --Amye Photo credit Lee Willis

Which of these two photos of Chestry Oak shows a gallop stride that YOU would want as you are in the final strides of your approach to a solid fence? Can you se...e what a risk riders take by just galloping on down and jumping off the forehand? Spring load the hocks for the ability to jump UP----
