+ . A soother can be a great tool for a newborn baby that has already established breastfeeding but can quickly become a sleep prop + you can quickly find yourself replacing it 20+ times a night which no one wants! So let’s understand a few things to start! Babies develop a sucking reflex in the womb + it stays reflexic until somewhere between 2 + 4 months.... The Canadian Pediatric Society states there are many theories on how pacifiers might be protective in the sleep environment. One recent study suggests that pacifiers lower the auditory arousal threshold + may provide a mechanical barrier to rolling over into the prone (on tummy) position. An infant who is soother by a pacifier may not move as often, thus limiting the chances of being covered by blankets. Others speculate that pacifiers may reduce reflux which can sometimes cause apnea (temporary cessation of breathing) Some studies suggest the pacifiers can lead to a slight carbon dioxide retention + increase a babe’s respiratory drive. Based on all the information above there does appear to be an association between the use of a pacifier and a reduced risk of SIDS. However no recommendation to use pacifiers to reduce the risk of SIDS can or have been made at this time.

+ . This can be with breast or bottle feeding but when considering breastfeeding if we are not effectively emptying the milk sinuses-we are not stimulating our bodies to make more milk (Supply + Demand) :... Licking lips, smacking/sucking sounds Sucking on anything nearby Rooting (turning head and wide open mouth) Hands to mouth Fidgeting or squirming Fussing Crying/turning red . Young + healthy babes typically have a natural ability to regulate their intake of calories + we want to help them to retain this ability through responding to them when their hungry + allowing them to stop when they are full. : Mature milk comes in more quickly Regain birthweight faster Decreased risk of jaundice Using a bottle in the early days + weeks when we have a goal of exclusively breastfeeding can lead to a drop in supply/difficulty latching Soothers can cause problems through delaying your responsiveness to feed through masking hunger cues as babes have an intrinsic reflux to suck and although they settle with a soother they may still be hungry. Some studies have found babes who use a soother feed on average 30minutes less/day than babes who do not take a soother. See more
