This week's Flora Friday highlights Berberis repens (creeping mahonia or Oregon grape). Creeping mahonia belongs to a small family, Berberidaceae. In Alberta it is confined to the southwest in the Rocky Mountains, locally abundant growing in shaded montane forests, and is a common understory associated with some ecosites. Creeping mahonia is found in British Columbia and south in the Rocky Mountain States east as far as Minnesota and south into Mexico. Traditional aboriginal ...uses of the species were numerous - tonics taken for various ailments of the digestive system and the alkaloid berberine was obtained from the root bark and used for its broad spectrum antifungal and antibacterial properties. It was used to treat liver disorders and dilate blood vessels, and supposedly lower blood pressure. The bright yellow wood was used to make a yellow dye, and the juice from the berries was given to horses to cure coughs. Modern uses of the species are also considerable, listed as a tonic, laxative, stimulant, and antiseptic, and the fruit is prized for making jellies, fruit, and pies. Various related species have been extensively cultivated for ornamentals for use in shaded gardens. The rather unique leaves are used in crafts and making Christmas decorations. Berberis repens is a low trailing shrub, the stems rooting at the nodes. Leaves are thick and leathery, arranged pinnately, oblong-oval, with stiff spiny teeth on the margins. Leaves persist into the fall and turn red purple. Flowers are yellow, appear in clusters and produce a juicy blue-glaucous berry containing several seeds.
