Before the early blast of winter arrived in the valley, our vineyard manager Felix Egerer was out putting some end of season love back into our soils. Making use of our new, no-till drill across our vineyard site - an exciting addition to our farm! The benefits of this cutting-edge style of cover cropping are countless, not only aiding erosion control and the quality of our soils, but also in helping with water conservation and our overall energy efficiency. Felix composed a ...custom seed blend of six winter-hardy species that will germinate and grow before going dormant over the winter and growing again in spring. This ensures that excess nutrients are captured and protected from leaching by the winter rains and snow. The efforts are part of a research project in cooperation with Dr. Miranda Hart at UBC Okanagan. It is supported through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. Last day of harvest! And what a stunning day in the valley to bring in our remaining rows of Riesling. We were so fortunate to work with such a great crew of new and returning pickers this vintage. It is truly such a highlight of our year, bringing in the fruits of the season, intermingled with tailgate coffee breaks and sharing stories and laughs in the field especially this year. Cover crops good enough to eat!! These daikon radishes were part of our early summer seeding program in our newly planted Pinot field, alongside a bevy of other beneficial crops. Their long tap roots aid with soil aeration and water infiltration and they act as nitrogen stores over winter, until they release it in the spring as they decay. ...
