Sofia loves Coco . Coco loves to snuggle and specifically be with the humans. Therefore she accepts that Sofia is around . I regularly laugh at these two and their relationship. Do you let your dog on the future? We are frequently asked if dogs on the furniture is okay. It really depends on the dog. If you have a dog that misbehaves or pushes boundaries, having them off the furniture can be a way to assist with boundaries and structure. ... This means does you dog stand on the coach, look out the window and bark? Do they growl or get grumpy if moved from a spot? Are you trying to correct other bad habits? If the answer is yes then the furniture may not be the best spot for them. My dogs are permitted up, but they have to curl up and lay down. It is a spot where I expect them to be relaxed.

Did you know we offer a board and train program? Board and train is when the dog comes and lives with us for a period of time. During this time we work on any issues the family has identified, general obedience, behavioral issues and manners. During your dogs stay you recieve updates, can ask questions and will know all about your dogs progress. At the end of their training you will complete "go home" sessions. These are designed for you to now learn how to communicate with ...your dog and set them up for success at home. If you have any questions send us a direct message. We do have some availability coming up and would love to work with you and your dog.

What kind of morning person are you? I am a bright and early kinda gal and most productive in the a.m.. Miss Sofia is the type who would rather stay in bed . She is all about snuggling some pillows, but today's snuggle session might be a bit much .

Do you set expectations for your dog? We talk about this a lot! It is important to decide how you want your dog to be and to follow through with ensuring they understand. Your dog wont naturally know to not jump on you, not bark, not steal food, not counter surf, etc. It is up to the pet owner to show the dog what is expected.... This also means it is important to decide what you want from your dog. Dogs do not communicate the same way that we do and we need to work on our communication style and showing what we are asking. You can yell no at your dog, but do they know what no means?

Thank you all for the Coco well wishes ! She has basically been sleeping away her time. She is also not enjoying being given medication . Which I don't blame her, as I am sure her mouth is pretty uncomfortable right now. She desperately needs her face brushed, but I am trying to give her sometime to heal before I bother her with a brush out. She is getting all the love and attention she deserves .

My weekend doesn't "really" start until tomorrow afternoon. However, sometimes you just have one of those weeks where you deserve to pre-enjoy the weekend. Today is one of those day! I am so looking forward to a glass of wine, TV and snuggling the doggies . Perfect evening . Oh and of course placing my online grocery order for tomorrow . That's the adulting part that always creeps up. How do you kick of the weekend?

Puppies can get distracted! This is a very true statement. For a young dog the entire world is exciting. Distractions can be such things as snow, leaves, rocks, birds, twigs, people, traffic, etc. Be patient! Seek out ways to practice with less distractions and then incorporate different distractions as your dog improves. Every dog is different! They will all have different attention spans and paces that they learn at. When we teach stay we often talk about distractions, but we also talk about how some dogs may struggle with distance or time. We figure out where the dog is comfortable and then grow and advance from there.

Today was a stressful day in our household. Miss Coco had dental surgery and this doggie mom was worried every moment. She got along great and is now curled up beside me . She did have to lose all her teeth, but in the long run she will feel so much better. Coco is the most gentle, sweetest and snuggly dog. We felt pretty bad about sending her off for this surgery. It's not like you can explain what's going to happen and why . ... Chloe was so happy to be reunited with Coco, but I did have to remind her to give Coco some space. Those two are a little duo and Chloe seemed confused when we left today and did not bring Coco back. Sofia was also excited to see Coco, but she has a lot of energy and tends to not be Coco's preferred company. As always the staff at Animal Medical Centre were fabulous! They estimated that I would hear from them around noon and sure enough probably 10 minutes before they called. They took excellent care of our girl . Now I shall spend the evening snuggling this cutie and telling her that noone will even notice her tongue sticking out.

We are excited! The plan is for Wine Wednesday to return next week ! For those who do not know what I am talking about...Wine Wednesday is when we do a Facebook live and you join me for a glass of wine or to whine about your dog . There have been some scheduling issues that have prevented me from doing this, and I think I have arranged the schedule that it should work now .... In the meantime comment with your questions or topics you would like me to discuss. We can offer tips, tricks, or just discuss out favorite wines . The possibilities are endless. I have missed connecting with you all through those weekly videos and look forward to seeing you then . The video will then be uploaded to our YouTube page.

Earlier today I asked Jason to do something, but he couldn't because him and Sofia were hanging out . However, this becomes a good dog training tip. I often talk about freedom being earned. Sofia is permitted up on the furniture, snuggling and what not, but this is because she is a well behaved dog. Sofia would have different rules if is she was not well behaved, didn't listen, was reactive, had anxiety, or even aggression. Any of those issues would warrant evaluating the freedom she has. This is not said as a "punishment" and instead is an example of the dog requiring more guidance, rules, boundaries and structure. Dogs thrive when we provide them with those four things. If a dog is struggling it is important that we step up and help them through it.

I am loving these beautiful winter days ! The sun is shining and it is melting the snow . Get out and enjoy the day! What is your favorite outdoor activity this time of year? Mine is walking and hiking. So many trails are still fabulous during this time of year.

Tasha's Dog Training & More 19.11.2020

Guess what? Every dog is different . Some will be super easy to train and some will give you a run for your money. That doesn't mean that you are doing anything wrong. You may not be communicating in a way that makes sense. Additionally, dogs have different personalities, strengths and weaknesses. What works for one dog may not work for another. The important thing is that you keep working, be consistent and set rules for your dog.

For this weeks Fabulous Friday post I wanted to just talk about supporting local in general. Typically I select a favorite local business and talk about something I love, but this week I wanted to remind people to support local. Tell me about your favorite local business. Is it a restaurant? Store? Or a local experience? Now that the holidays are over let's remember to still support our local businesses. Maybe order some takeout, see if they do curb side pickup or online ordering.

A week ago I asked my Life Skills clients to take a step back and look at their day to day interactions with their dog. This is an important thing that anyone can do. They were to report back on their discoveries. I wanted them to see if their dog relaxes on their own, has a need to follow them, paces, listens to commands, etc. What is a day in your dogs life like? Do they get away with bad habits? Are they pushy? Sometimes we don't take the time to see what might be happening right in front of us. Take a step back and review what a day in your dogs life is like. It just might help you to have a better dog .

It was a very busy Saturday! I am blessed to get to do what I do . Today we had a jam packed training day and then I grabbed some food with a friend. A pretty perfect Saturday if you ask me . Since I left the house so early and was gone for so long, Sofia was happy to see me return. She wanted to tell me secrets and let me know how her day went .

Tasha's Dog Training & More 11.11.2020

Training is more then just commands. When we work with dogs we will teach obedience commands, but we also focus on what is happening in the house and how the dogs overall behavior is. Additionally, obedience commands can be used to provide guidance, give instruction, calm the dog and to work their mind. There are many things that go into having a good and well behaved dog. Often people only see one or the other, and do not see the whole picture and what it means for the dog. Both behavior and obedience go side by side and can impact the other.

It is a pretty mild day for the first day of winter ! I was out in a spring jacket . I don't mind winter. Every season has their good qualities . Some winter good qualities are: snow is pretty, comfy clothes, cozy pajamas, comfort food (soups, stews and other yummy things) and watching the dogs run and play in the snow. What is your favorite thing about winter?

Today's post is relevant to my personal goals, but I do hope it motivates others to work towards their own. I have shared that I am on a mission to be a healthier version of me . I am not permitting myself to use the holidays as a reason to not do it right now. This does not mean that I won't indulge in festive goodies, it just means that I won't allow one bad meal or day of eating to sabotage a whole week . This means that today I prepped some breakfasts, snacks and lunche...s. I also took out and began to prep what I will have for supper. I have also arranged my schedule in a way that will help to keep me on track . Whatever your goals are, planning plays a key role in that. Maybe you want a better behaved dog (that's a goal relevant to my page ), you will need to make commitments and time to accomplish the goals that you want with your dog. Much like my goals there is no magic want to accomplish it instantly. Preparing, planning and doing are key parts.

Tasha's Dog Training & More 01.11.2020

We love working with puppies! Puppies are so cute and full of energy . They can also be a lot of work . We recommend starting training when your dog is young. Training starts from the moment you bring your puppy home, it is just that our expectations may be different then those we have for an older dog. We suggest planning before the puppy comes home. Will you crate train? What type of crate? Where is the puppy allowed to be in the house? What will you feed? Are they ...allowed in bedrooms? On beds? On furniture? Where do you want them to be in the vehicle? Etc. I am always telling my clients to have family meetings to discuss what they want from their puppy/dog. One of the hardest parts can be getting the whole family on the same page. People can have widely different opinions on what they want in a dog.

Well I am feeling a bit tired today . The reason for this would be none other than Callie cat . Last night she was truly vocal and demanding. Of course all of this happening in the middle of the night . She didn't like that a door was closed...so she woke me. She didn't like that there wasn't enough food and water in her dish...so she woke me. Then the final wakeup I am pretty sure was purely for attention. This cat is the true boss of the house! Luckily we don't train on Mondays and it is the perfect weather to stay home and curl up .

Fabulous Fridays! Fabulous Fridays is when I showcase one of my favorite local things. Do you know what is on this week? Christmas shopping !!! I have started my shopping, but I am now on a mission to finish it. Hopefully this weekend if everything goes right.... Tell me where your favorite place to Christmas shop is . Or do you have a go to item that you enjoy gifting to others? We do all our shopping for holidays locally and I truly love giving items that were made here in Cape Breton. Okay...I suppose the nephew's and kiddies in our life receive different gifts that aren't necessarily local, but everyone else receives local. Let's get out their and support Cape Breton businesses and families . Also, wish me luck with ny mission to finish shopping. Like this post, comment and tell us about your favorite local places to eat, shop, learn and explore.

Yesterday I discussed what our Life Skills & Beyond class recently worked on. We teach a different trick everytime we do Life Skills. We got some rave reviews on this one. When I select a trick I do look for one that will not create a bad or annoying habit . The trick we did was balancing an object (for this we used food) on their nose. You do not start with adding the food right away and instead condition them to the idea of what is going to happen. So there was a lot of c...onditioning going on and some of the dogs progressed fairly quickly. Here are Charlie and Gus balancing their food . Look closely... can you see it on their noses? Training can be fun! Have some fun with your dog and teach them something new .

This is me . I am out in my element, doing what I love, dog hair on my hat and loving life . Many people know I am all about self care and I am pretty good at it . I like my hair appointments, facials, massage, reiki and chiropractic appointments. What I can be bad for is not making time to always eat properly and get that exercise in. Life is busy and due to various medical reasons (way too long a story for here ...maybe another day) it became easy to not always pri...oritize those things. Also, to not always feel well enough to do them. A character flaw of mine is I am either all in or not in. This means one not on track day can turn into a week of not being on track . Its how my brain works. It isn't the way to view things, but it has become how I view things. However, I have been taking some time to focus and get back on track. It has been a gradual easing into it. Today I spent time getting all my meal prep for the week in. All my food is cooked and organized. I will be sharing this journey in my stories and would love for you to follow along. Maybe it will help someone else or you may have tips to help me . I love learning from others . Stay tuned for the progress I make and for a few bumps along the way .

This week in Life Skills & Beyond we focused on mental stimulation, trick training and confidence boosting exercises. We often talk about working our dogs brains and the importance of doing this. A confidence boosting exercise can be anything you can come up with. This week we introduced a broom . We started off with the broom on the ground, moved to dogs walking over it while it was on the ground and then elevated the stick. The dogs could then either walk or jump over i...t. Lots of things happen during an exercise such as this....some dogs don't like brooms, they don't know what we are asking them and they are uncertain how to accomplish what we want. Due to their uncertainty some dogs would put on the breaks, some would avoid and some even just knocked it down. It is not complex and the dogs did catch on quickly. That is the confidence part! In the beginning they are uncertain and then they realize they made their owners happy and nothing bad happened to them. Exercises such as this can be done with a wide variety of objects around your home.

We love a good down stay. Remember to set expectations for your dog and grow on their skill set. I won't expect a young puppy to hold a down stay for a half hour the first time I show them. Instead I grow on what I taught them and increase the expectation. This goes for any command that you are teaching. Set small attainable goals and advance from there. Dog training is not a race and you aren't in competition with anyone.

Well it has been a rainy and chilly day . Snuggling the doggies is a perfect way to unwind after a day like that. Who can resist these two snuggly buddies? Fabulous Fridays! Fabulous Fridays is when I showcase one of my favorite local things. Have you checked out the new bookstore downtown? On Paper Books is worth the visit and highly recommended.... This new shop is super cute and has lots of goodies for all kinds of interests. I picked up two books for myself, their reusable shopping bag and some other items for Christmas presents. Fabulous Fridays! Fabulous Fridays is when I showcase one of my favorite local things. Today I wanted to talk about sage_moonboutique . This is a fabulous little shop in North Sydney.... During lockdown they did (continue to do) online sales on social media. They have even been doing some home deliveries. How great is that?!?! I love seeing the various ways businesses have continued to operate. They recently reopened their store front and I suggest checking them out online or in person. They have jewelry, books, home accessories, oils, crystals, and so much more! Pictured are items from a recent visit to the shop. Remember there are many ways to support a business without purchasing anything . You can following them on social media, as well as liking, commenting or sharing their posts. Jax definitely has a picture perfect place command. Place is about going into a relaxed and calm state. We love the place command and regularly use it with our personal dogs and any dogs who are here for board and train. It can be used when they are excited, when people come over, while you are cooking or cleaning, etc. We use our mats as a visual for people, but as a dog comprehends place it can be used with or without a physical object to go to. ... Also how cute is Jax's sweater?!?!?

Rainy days mean lots of drills in the house for our board and train. Today she was doing some work with my three personal dogs. Remember that distractions can be anything that you can come up with. Mokka came here with reactivity and others dogs are a big distraction for her. Even dogs on the television are a distraction she has had to work on. ... Tomorrow is suppose to be sunny and we are excited about that !

Hello Fabulous People! I realized it has been a little while since I really showed my face on here and time for an intro/re-intro. For those of you who don't know I am Tasha and the owner of Tasha's Dog Training & More. Here are some things about me:... I live with my boyfriend Jason (aka Hig), our cat and three dogs. My favorite food is sushi . Even mentioning sushi makes me want it! Presently I am now considering ordering sushi for supper . I have previously been a vegetarian and weekly consider going back to it. Presently I do eat seafood and chicken. My deep passion for dog training is strongly routed in my need to help people. I care about people and the struggles they have. I am all about self care . I love hair apts, facials, massage, reiki and chiropractic visits. The pandemic has taught me to slow down, set boundaries and take time for myself. I will outsource just about any task if it gives me time to do other things . I think this probably goes on the list of things my family doesn't fully get about me. On my mission of outsourcing things, I often joke (not joke) about hiring someone to cook . Jason seems to think that's a step to far. Imagine having someone who did all your meal prep every Sunday. Come on folks thats a great business idea! I love organizing! I am a pretty organized and structured person. The downfall to this is that disorganization and interruptions with my schedule have a negative impact on my mental health. . I need to follow the routine! I am a spiritual person who regualrly mediates and writes in a gratitude journal. I gravitate to similar people. I like to start my day by pulling an affirmation card. I love yoga . This post is so long because I am someone who likes to share .

Tasha's Dog Training & More 19.08.2020

Do you know why I became a dog trainer? I have definitely talked about this before, but many people assume its all about the dogs. Obviously I love dogs! I have three of my own after all . I love animals in general! It's true that there is no better feeling then seeing the success a dog can have! I love cheering on my clients. One of my big motivators is actually people. I enjoy helping people overcome the difficulty they are having with their dog, be an ear to listen to th...e struggle and guide them along their training journey. Having a dog can be difficult! The people who are struggling with housebreaking, jumping, nipping, etc...can be just as frustrated as the people struggling with anxiety, fearfulness, aggression, etc. I like to advocate for people . I often tell my clients to advocate for their dogs, but I am here to advocate for them. I like to shed light on training tools, muzzles, behavioral issues and that not every dog is easy to train.

I am excited to enjoy some turkey dinner today !

People often ask us about getting their dog a friend. This depends entirely on the dogs, their training and their personalities. It can be hard for humans, but not all dogs are meant to have dog friends. Some people are social and some people are not . It can be the same for dogs. Sofia is social and Coco will not seek out interactions, but is okay if they are happening.

Tasha's Dog Training & More 30.07.2020

Our board and train enjoyed an adventure today. Mokka was working on her car manners. We expect the dogs to calmly get in and out of the vehicle and to be calm while travelling. We then went to one of our favorite places...the board walk. Many people know that we do all our training downtown . We selected that location about 6 years ago and it has been great for us! We can usually be found at the Civic Centre, boardwalk or exploring downtown Sydney. ... Mokka worked on her heel, sit, stay, come and being calm around people and other dogs. We did a lot of various drills. As you can see from the pics she then had a power nap on the way home. For more videos and pics of Mokka you can follow our stories. Additionally she has a highlight on our Instagram.

Look how happy Gus is with himself ! This week our Life Skills & Beyond group went on a downtown adventure. Although we do practice our structured walking during these adventures, the main purpose is actually to find different ways to work their brains and complete confidence boosting exercises. Take an exercises such as this, to us it would not look very complicated, but to a dog there are a lot of different things happening here:... the bench has an almost slippery feeling. there are arms between the seats that limit how much space they have to work with. the seat has slits in it that can be confusing as the dog attempts to balance and not slide through. they are being asked to jump up on something and are often unsure about it. once on the object we get them to sit or lay. This is an additional thing they have to think through. You do not need to make an exercise complicated for it to be effective.

Sunday's are for spending time with the doggies . While I enjoyed a little sleep in today with two of the dogs, Sofia had already enjoyed an outdoor adventure. Did you get out with your dog today? A combination of physical and mental exercises are very important. These two things can have a huge impact on your dogs behavior. We recommend structured walking, some play and mental exercises that make them work that brain . ... Me and Sofia have also determined we are not good at doing a selfie together .

Rainy days don't stop our board and train from getting work done. This morning Mokka was practicing her place command around movement and distractions. Place command is great for encouraging a calm mindset and allowing you to get things done. While Mokka was in place her trainer did dishes, moved freely around the house and got some work done. ... Mokka has been displaying some separation anxiety and this command is more difficult for her when someone leaves the room.

Tasha's Dog Training & More 08.06.2020

Now this is a great Out command! If you have the volume up you can hear him being told out and then okay to resume eating. The out command is one of our favorites! This command is all about disengaging with whatever they are doing. It can mean stop playing, drop that, don't go near that, etc. There are so many uses for it. They did an awesome job with this! Go Rebecca and Ollie!!!

Tasha's Dog Training & More 05.06.2020

We talk a lot about working with distractions. What does distractions mean? A distraction can be anything that challenges your dog. Here are some examples you can use at home while your dog practices commands or drills: tossing a toy cooking... cleaning interacting with another pet interacting with other people in the home moving around or going into a different room knocking on the door Distractions do not have to be complicated. Often we have lots of easy to use distractions at our disposal. Take a look around and see what you have that can be useful or will challenge your dog. What distracts your dog?

Our board and train has been working hard and coming along way. It has been a gorgeous fall day for some outdoor adventures. Reactivity and aggression can be difficult things for dogs. For Mokka here in the home she doesn't even care about my personal dogs. The issue is outside and on leash. You can see her breathing and body change when she realizes another dog is near by. It is important to teach her how to be calm and what is expected in these situations.

Sofia's training tip for today: Good behavior warrants freedom . Many of my clients know that each of my dogs have different rules and boundaries in place. These are based on what each dog can handle.... Sofia is the youngest of our dogs and actually has more structure in her life then the other two. Guess what? This doesn't make her sad! She isn't jealous of the other dogs! She lives a happy, healthy and well-balanced life . Do you want to see changes in your dog? Review how you interact with your dog.

Do you encourage calm behavior? We always say to reward the calm you see . So many people struggle with being in public places with their dogs. The great thing about having a dog is getting to explore the world with them! It is important to practice and build up your dogs skills. If you decided to run a marathon you would practice that skill, build up time and distance. If you are struggling with your dog look at them the same way.

We are loving the fall weather ! Do you know what the dog's found this weeks biggest distraction to be? The LEAVES! All of a sudden there are just so many leaves down. Yesterday during one of my classes leaves were literally raining on me .... I love fall and completely embrace this distraction. We encourage owners to seek out different distractions and experiences for their dogs. It is a very important part of their development. Experiencing new things can also boost confidence in your dog.

Our board and train Miss Mokka has been busy working on her skills. She is wearing the baskerville muzzle. This is our preferred brand of muzzle . Why you might ask? They can eat, drink and pant easily with it on. Muzzles are a great tool for keeping dogs and their environment safe. Today's great success would be that she came across two barking dogs on todays structured walk, and she made the decision to not bark. Go Mokka! Reactivity or leash aggression can be very diffic...ult on owners, but it is something that can be resolved with work and consistency. Mokka an presently hold a down stay for over one hour. Let's see how we can expand on that .
