In Syria, we enjoy a beverage called Mate (pronounced mhe-tea), and is most popular among our people (Druze). At almost any social gathering you will will see people drinking Mate out of tiny cups with a special spoon-straw utensil for sipping. A few spoonfuls of the dry, grassy leaves are put in a tiny cup, boiling water is poured over and your preferred amount of sugar. After the first cup is done, more boiling water is added, and more sugar if necessary, and slowly the brew will become weaker. We love hosting friends for Mate, and look forward to doing so again.
