A CONVERSATION ABOUT PERCEIVED VALUE: A customer asked a contractor friend of mine how much it would cost to do this project. My friend gave him a proposal: $4...500 The customer responded: That’s seems really high. My friend asked: What do you think is a reasonable price for this job? The customer answered: $2500 maximum My friend responded: Ok, then I invite you to do it yourself. The customer answered: I don't know how to. My friend responded: Alright, then how about for $2500 I'll teach you how to. So besides saving you $2000, you'll learn valuable skills that will benefit you in the future. The customer answered: Sounds good! Let’s do it! My friend responded: Great! To get started, you are going to need some tools. You will need a chop saw, table saw, cordless drill, bit set, router, skill saw, jig saw, tool belt, hammer, etc.. The customer answered: But I don't have any of those tools and I can't justify buying all of these for one job. My friend responded: Ok. Well then for an additional $300 I can rent my tools to you to use for this project. The customer answered: Okay. That’s fair. My friend responded: Great! We will start the project on Monday. The customer answered: I work Monday through Friday. I’m only available on the weekends. My friend responded: If you want to learn from me then you will need to work when I work. This project will take 3 days so you will need to take 3 days off work. The customer answered: That means I’m going to have to sacrifice my pay for 3 days or use my vacation time! My friend responded: That’s true. Remember, when you do a job yourself you need to account for unproductive factors. The customer answered: What do you mean by that? My friend responded: Doing a job completely from start to finish includes time spent to plan the project, pick up materials, travel time, gas, set up time, clean up, and waste disposal amongst other things. That’s all in addition to the actual project itself. And speaking of materials, that’s where we will start on Monday so I need you to meet me at the lumberyard at 6:00am. The customer answered: At 6am?!! My work day doesn’t usually start until 8am! My friend responded: Well then you’re in luck! My plan is to start on the deck build by 8am. But to do so we have to start at 6am to get materials picked up, loaded and delivered to your job site. The customer answered: You know, I’m realizing that a lot more goes in to a job than what a customer sees in the finished project. Your proposal of $4500 is very reasonable. I would like you to handle the project. CONCLUSION: When you pay for a job, especially a custom job, (whether it’s a physical project or digital project) you pay not only for the material and the work to be completed. You also pay for: Knowledge Experience Custom Skills Tools Time to plan Time to prepare Professionalism Work Ethic Excellence Discipline Commitment Integrity Taxes Licenses Sacrifices Liabilities Insurance Permits If you request a proposal for custom work to be done, please don’t disrespect a service provider by trying to get them to lower their prices. If their proposal exceeds your budget, there’s nothing wrong with getting other proposals. Just remember.. you get what you pay for. SERVICE PROVIDERS: Know your worth and be confident in it. CONSUMERS: Recognize their worth and be respectful of it. Sharing this to support all my friends, family and clients who are Entrepreneurs, Business Owners and Tradesman.

Sad news from Paris about the passing of Kenzo Takada, one of the true fashion greats KENZO was the only designer whose work was chosen in consecutive year...s as the Fashion Museum‘s Dress of the Year. In 1976, two ensembles showcasing his genius with colour and pattern; followed in 1977 by his brilliantly cut oversized shirt, a new fashion silhouette, and a look that both foretold and heralded the work of other Japanese designers who changed the look of fashion forever in the 1980s See more

*COMING NEXT WEEK* Join Polly Leonard, the founder and editor of Selvedge Magazine for 5 episodes of the Selvedge Podcast. She has been making, thinking and wr...iting about textiles for 40 years. The more you learn about textiles, the more you learn how much there is to still discover. Podcast features interviews with artists, designers, NGOs, co-operatives, collectors. Episode 1 Up-cycling With the global textile industry the second-largest polluter on the planet and landfills groaning with barely worn clothing, there is no better topic for our first episode than Up-cycling. With its roots in the make-do and mend mentality, that for crafters never really went away, upcycling has the potential to make a tremendously positive environmental and social impact. Episode 2 Plastic Fantastic The topic for Episode 2 is plastic. Is it as bad as we think it is? To answer this question, Polly speaks with a product designer redefining how we look at plastic bottles, an Italian designer who combines polyurethane with post-production textile waste, and a Senegalese partnership which brings vibrant African design to a European market. Episode 3 High Fibre Polly investigates why wonderful natural fibres have lost the battle of popularity so abysmally? Clothing is increasingly constructed from a narrow range of mostly synthetic fibres Episode 4 Red Hot The earliest existing proof of dyed thread found in turkey dates back to the sixth millennium, it was red. In this episode, we find out why red that is the hottest colour? We uncover the roots of ancient colourants and how today’s designers are taking advantage they’re their inherent qualities. Episode 5 Flower Power In this episode, we stop and smell the roses discovering on the way an enduring connection between fabric, flowers and philosophy.

"In 1992 Dr Ulla Tillander-Godenhielm discover an album of drawings, which belonged to Fabergé workmaster, Henrik Wigström who was a pupil and later a colleague... of Michael Perchin in his Saint Petersburg workshop. They both worked exclusively for the House of Fabergé, which employed several workmasters, scattered throughout the city in their own workshops, at any one time. These workmasters employed their own workers and were responsible for their own work. They were working independently but their output was for Fabergé. They were allowed to mark their pieces with their own marks and trained apprentices and employed journeymen. In 1900 the House of Fabergé brought the Saint Petersburg workmasters together in one building where Fabergé himself had an apartment. Wigström and his family lived in the building also. This proved to be a very efficient way to run the business." love D'Artagnan. See more

So, what's up with vegetable ivory? Vegetable Ivory Buttons (VI) are some of my favorite types of buttons. They are made from the Tagua Nut, which is the see...d that is found on certain Palm Trees, mainly in South America. They were initially widely used to make buttons back in the 1880s by a button manufacturer in Rochester NY. Before plastics came into play, approximately 20% of all buttons were made from vegetable ivory. The tagua nut is very pliable and relatively easy to carve, sometimes with extreme intricacy by talented carvers. It was used for many other things such as netsukes and jewelry. As far as buttons, they were mass produced with most being rather ordinary clothing buttons, BUT, there are some that were carved and pierced that really are extraordinary and often overlooked by collectors. For new collector's, it's a great subject to start with as they can be inexpensive and rather easy to find, although there are some very pricey and Fabulous Carved Vegetable Ivory Buttons and worth every penny. Vegetable Ivory buttons are still being made today as they are very eco friendly Elephants love Vegetable Ivory and I love elephants and VI No Just There is lots of information out there on VI buttons including a book by Pat and David Fields 'From Nut to Button' and if any of you VI experts out there, (I personally know of one) that know far more than I, would like to comment with any other factoids or resources, that would be great! Spread the info! Feel free to share this post. Here are some examples that I have in my collection or have shared with others. All images are mine with the exception of the non buttony images, nuts and trees and stuff.

Happy Birthday Oscar de la Renta! This c.1978 evening ensemble is exemplary of Oscar de la Renta's romantic design aesthetic. Known for his luxurious, dramatic..., and feminine sensibility, de la Renta pairs a peasant blouse with bishop sleeves and a full skirt, thereby injecting historical references into the popular gypsy look of the late seventies. In its use of elements from the 1860s, this piece is characteristic of the historicizing trend in fashion during the 1970s.

TEMARI Time-honoured Japanese crafts come together in a joyous partnership Temari, ‘handball’ in Japanese, has a long and colourful past. Making temari was an e...ntertaining pastime for noble women in the early part of the Edo Period (1600-1868). Originally crafted from the same silk threads woven into elegant kimono, temari were made as pretty playthings. When cotton was introduced into Japan, women of lesser means could afford to make them and the craft spread throughout the country. Crafters of each region added a personal touch, recycling local fibres and dried plants into each ball. Embroidery designs gained a regional aspect with the addition of geometric and floral designs symbolic to each area. Japanese mothers and grandmothers made temari to give to their young children. The girls and boys loved mari-tsuki, a game played by singing nonsense rhymes while tossing the ball. Celebrations of both New Year and Girl’s Day called for new temari. A gift to a bride symbolized good luck in her new home. Today however, the thread-wrapped and embroidered balls are displayed and enjoyed as works of fibre art.
