Keep receipts and talk to your employer. You may be able to claim the home office deduction this year.
How do you keep on top of your books throughout the year so you are not scrambling at tax time? I make sure to do any catch up work at the end of every quarter. The fact that I need to pay HST and WSIB for the family business helps me keep those deadlines! We all fall behind sometimes, but having a schedule that you can keep to helps it from becoming a huge, overwhelming, pile.
As the tax season slows down the garlic season is ramping up. I pulled up one of our turban garlics today to check on their progress. This variety will be ready a few weeks before the main harvest.
The Tatlock Quarry Lookout is open for the season. When you drop off tax papers be sure to stop and see our local marble mine. Turn on Guthrie road, the first left after Tatlock Bookkeeping, and follow the road to the lookout.
Have you been too busy in the garden to do your taxes? The filing deadline is today (in 2 weeks if you are self employed). Mesage me to get them done.
From the CRA: As announced by the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, on May 15, 2020, the CRA has extended benefit payments until the end of September for those who are unable to file their 2019 tax return on time. For individuals who already receive the Canada child benefit, the GST/HST credit, or both, their estimated payments will be based on the information from their 2018 tax return. In addition, as noted in the Prime Ministers News Release on May 12, 2020, this also applies to temporarily extending GIS and Allowance payments if seniors 2019 income information has not been assessed.

More small businesses can now apply for the CEBA line of credit. If your payroll was between $20 000 and 1.5 million last year you are now eligible. https://ceba-cuec.ca/
The CERB program has been updated for those who are self-employed and part of the gig economy. If you have or expect to make less than $1000 in a 14 day period you are now eligible to apply. The link is below. Check out the CERB eligibility dates as I have found with our declining income that although we did okay in March, our declining income at the end of March and beginning of April makes me eligible in that period. https://www.canada.ca//benefi/apply-for-cerb-with-cra.html

Filing early despite the extended deadline ensures the CRA has time to calculate credits like the Child Tax Benefit.

I know, its a bookkeeping business, but in light of current events Ive decided to throw in a little joy and share some gardening and growing tidbits too. My garden is my happy place and we are all in a space where our hope for the future is bigger than our desire to analyze our tax deductions.

What is a T4A? The T4A is essentially the catch-all "you got money from someone" slip. From pensions to honoraria it will all appear on a T4A and all must be claimed as part of your income when doing your taxes.
The tax filing deadline has been extended 1 month. If you owe income taxes you can wait until September 1st to pay. There will be a 1 time top up of the HST credit in the Spring and a full year top up of the Child Tax Benefit. The CRA recommends still filing as early as you can as they need your information to get the upcoming years benefits like Trillium, Child Tax, and HST calculated.

Run a business from home? You can write off part of your expenses. For example, my home office takes up 10% if the square footage of our home, and is used exclusively for work. My propane bill just came it at 217.99 (before HST) so, 21.80 of that can be considered a business expense.
Looking for help with business deductions? Send me a pm! I have that horrible cough going around, messaging beats a phone call this week.
Completed my Xero training yesterday. This cloud based accounting software, originally from New Zealand, offers special pricing to not for profits.
