When should I start my CPP? A question I am sure you asked yourself. As a refresher, CPP can be started as early as age 60 and as late as age 70. When a person elects to start CPP before age 65, the benefit that would have been paid at age 65 is reduced by 0.6% for each month before age 65 CPP is started. If a person starts at age 60, then that’s 60 months early, which means a 60 x 0.6% = 36% reduction in the benefit. Conversely, if a client waits until age 70, there is a 0.7...% bonus paid for each month after age 65 the pension is deferred. Therefore, if a person waits until age 70 to start, there will be an extra 60 x 0.7% = 42% addition to the benefit. If the age 65 benefit was $1,000, then starting at age 60 means the client would receive $640 monthly, if they were to wait until age 70, they would receive $1,420. Waiting to start also has the benefit of the pension being indexed at the CPI until income begins. How to decide, let’s consider a few scenarios. You need the income, then start right away You are still working and don’t need the income or the associated taxes defer until the appropriate time You expect to live a long time, perhaps defer until 70 You could use the money to top up TFSA contributions, start now.
