The Discovery Islands are a bottleneck for migrating wild salmon, including critical Fraser River sockeye runs. They also happen to have the province's highest concentration of fish farms, which are losing control of their sea lice. Billions of lice are pouring from these Atlantic salmon farms into the path of outmigrating juvenile salmon, killing many before they reach the open ocean. DFO is currently in consultations with local First Nations to decide on the renewal of 18 ...fish farm licenses in the Discovery Islands, but they must consider every community along the length of the Fraser River and it's tributaries. 'Area-based' management does not work with a migratory fish who feeds this whole province. With Alexandra Morton Gwayum'dzi, Deirdre Leowinata, Jody Eriksson Farlyn Campbell

1. Fraser River sockeye salmon are on a path to extinction. 2. DFO's own science indicates sea lice have a "profound physiological impact" on young wild sockeye. 3. Simultaneously, DFO's managers are saying they haven't seen anything other than a "minimal threat". 4. This is how fish species are managed to extinction. It is exactly how the cod went - the Management Branch stops listening to the Science Branch.... *warning: disturbing images* Did you know Fisheries and Oceans Canada just did a risk assessment on the impacts of Atlantic salmon fish farms in the Discovery Islands and they ignored the issue of sea lice? One fish farm louse is enough to kill a baby wild salmon, and this is what the smolts looked like this year - does it look like a "minimal threat" to you? Fisheries Minister Jordan will decide whether to renew the fish farm licences in the Discovery Islands by December 18 ...and you can inform her decision! Please take action and tell her what you think at WildFirst.ca #getfishfarmsout #wildsalmon #fishlove #wildfirst #sealice #fishfarms #wildsalmon #discoveryislands #fisheriesandoceanscanada @ Discovery Islands See more

Photo by @orcalabbc This summer the B.C. coast was free of cruise ships and their underwater noise pollution. Researcher Janie Wray of @bcwhales who has been studying the unique calls of killer, humpback, and fin whales in British Columbia for more than 20 years jumped on the opportunity and teamed up with Orca Lab to install new hydrophones in the Johnstone Strait area, off northern Vancouver Island. This project is part of a larger coast-wide hydrophone network which will e...mploy sophisticated listening technology along the length of the B.C. coast. @wildbusfilms produced a short film for @hakaimag which I helped shoot alongside a wonderful crew! @wild_sky_productions @d.leowinata @awildsuze @quin_mcintire @kai_white Link to film in bio #orcas #whales #underwateracoustics #orcalab @ Blackfish Sound See more
