"Perched fifty feet above Lake Ontario at the edge Scarborough’s natural geological sight, the Fishleigh Drive Residence is a Taylor Smyth Architects designed house that embraces the views of the Bluffs as a blueprint for inspiration." "Enjoying the advantages (and beauty) of modern architecture, without giving up the integration of the building in nature and the surrounding landscape is possible, and this house proves it." Having completed a residence on Robert Street a few years ago, the same client returned to Taylor Smyth to design another new residence directly next door. The two houses are conceived as complimentary yet architecturally different residences. Both houses have a porch that continues the line of porches of the adjacent cottage style Victorian houses, and also employ the same motif of concealing the garage door with a wood-like cladding of phenolic Trespa panels that continue o...nto the adjacent walls. The tall second floor windows of this new house are each surrounded by a projecting frame and set into a red brick façade. Randomly sized, they evoke the dormer windows of the neighbouring houses, while creating a modern composition of glass and brick panels. Taking its cues from the Victorian vernacular of other residences in the neighbourhood, the front facade of Robert Street Residence features a two storey bay window and entry canopy that echo, without imitating, the proportion of the projecting bays and overhanging porches of its neighbours. Our client returned to us to design another new residence directly next door. The two houses are conceived as complimentary yet architecturally different residences. Both houses have a p...orch that continues the line of porches of the adjacent cottage style Victorian houses, and also employ the same motif of concealing the garage door with a wood-like cladding of phenolic Trespa panels that continue onto the adjacent walls. Construction is near completion for the new residence. Watch our social portals for images of this project in the future. In the meantime, our client shared this wonderful video of the orignal house ( Wright Real Estate Ltd.). Tucked away from the street behind another house, the original building was part of Moore’s Hearse Livery and used as a vehicle depot. Altered and added to over time, it was converted into a residence in the 1980’s. The only thing left from the livery are the brick walls in the courtyards. Taylor Smyth Architects, working with William Fulghum Design Associates, gutted the two-storey structure down to the bare studs and enhanced the key features of the residence with a contemp...orary light-filled interior that incorporates a rich material palette of wood, stone, bronze and leather. This Tower Renewal project involved the major retrofit of two 24 storey Toronto Community Housing buildings located near Victoria Park and Danforth Avenue in Toronto, Ontario. Both reinforced concrete buildings are characterized by exposed slab edges, brick cladding and punched windows. We approached this project as an opportunity to improve the lives of residents and create two classic modern slab-type towers hovering above the landscape in the park. High performance claddin...g systems comprised of iron spot masonry, EIFS stucco cladding and aluminum siding break down the mass of each building and provide a unique identifier for residents. Here's a sneak peek of the new Lawrence Midland Secondary School for the Toronto District School Board. The new school is comprised of a 4-storey central academic block and an adjacent 2-storey gymnasium block, with a total gross floor area of approximately 168,000 square feet. The material palette for the building utilizes large expanses of muted tones to give the building a monolithic presence; primarily a combination of light ironspot modular masonry, white glass tile and dark corrugated aluminum cladding. This exciting new school is a joint venture between ZAS Architects and Taylor Smyth Architects. "For the rebuild (of Fishleigh Dr. Residence), Ms. Rana and Mr. Abouali chose Taylor Smyth Architects. We drove by another house they designed in the area, also on the Bluffs, and really loved the clean, modern style, Mr. Abouali says. So we did some research to figure out who designed it. We basically called them up and said they didn’t have a choice but to work with us, Ms. Rana jokes. In Progress: We are happy to share a project currently underway for Seneca College. The Newnham Campus Food Hall, Cafeteria and Kitchen renovation and expansion project will offer a variety of seating options intermixed with flexible food stations that focus on fresh and local foods, including stations for grill, pizza and pasta, salad and soups, international (including ph) and a café. The centralized checkout will be replaced with enhanced ordering technology for faster s...ervice. The new food hall will double the size of the existing campus cafeteria. Built-in projector screens will be installed for use in a variety of campus events. A key element of the renovation project will be a new pedestrian street through the middle of the food hall, serving as a pathway to connect buildings A, B, C and D to E, F and G. As renovations for the kitchen and food preparation area start this spring, the new food hall, which will also expand outdoors to a canopied courtyard, is expected to open partially in the fall. Following the success of our first house overlooking the Scarborough Bluffs, we were approached to design another new residence a few blocks away, also perched at the edge of the Bluffs, 50 feet above Lake Ontario. The ground floor is centred on a dramatic double height great room, separated from the kitchen/dining area by a vertical wood screen. An open stair runs through the centre of the house, overlooking the great room and terminates at the third floor, where the roof deck, partially covered by a wood trellis, provides spectacular views out over the lake. .
