Watching the MLB playoffs this month brought us back to a very entertaining night in the summer of 2012 when the Border Cats and Rochester Honkers waited out a rain delay at Port Arthur Stadium. Instead of sitting in the dugout, both teams took the wet field and played an impromptu game of hockey on the tarp as well as going head-to-head in some fake war games. The team's then tried to outdo each other in other contests including a fake tanning bed by the Honkers and the Bo...rder Cats pitching a new muscle weight product. Of note in the video is that the shirtless Rochester player entering the tanning bed is none other than Chad Wallach, who is now the starting catcher for the Miami Marlins. Wallach, who made his MLB debut in 2017 with the Cincinnati Reds, is the son of former Montreal Expos great Tim Wallach. We look forward to many more entertaining nights at the ballpark in the summer of 2021 and hope to keep the rain delays to a minimum. See more

The Mandan Flickertails featuring numerous players on the original 2020 Thunder Bay Border Cats roster are in the stretch run at the Northwoods League three-team hub in Bismarck, North Dakota. The Flickertails blanked the Bismarck Bull Moose 11-0 on Wednesday night to improve their record to 23 and 17. With eight games remaining in the regular season, the Flickertails trail the first place Bismarck Larks by four games, however both teams have clinched playoff berths in the championship final series. Congratulations to righthander Patrick Pridgen (University of Oregon), who was named the NWL Pitcher of the Night for his outstanding performance in Wednesday's win. https://northwoodsleague.com//pridgen-comes-up-big-for-fl/

FLICKERTAILS BATTLE FOR TOP SPOT IN BISMARCK As the 2020 Northwoods League season continues south of the border, the Mandan Flickertails currently sit in second place in the three-team North Dakota hub with a 14-8 record, one game behind the Bismarck Larks. The Flickertails, who feature 17 players from the original Thunder Bay Border Cats roster, are coming off a 5-0 win over the Bismarck Bull Moose on Friday night and play their next game on Sunday afternoon against the Lar...ks. With the Flickertails nearing the halfway point of their 48-game schedule, outfielder Damone Hale (Yavapai CC) leads the club with a .274 batting average and in stolen bases with 12 in 15 games. Catcher Cole Elvis (California-Berkeley) has shown good power at the plate with a team leading three home runs and 17 runs batted in. On the mound, righthander Nick Hill (Nicholls State University) has appeared in five games, including four starts, and has a 2-1 record with one save and a stellar 1.69 earned run average. Lefthander John Farley (Eastern Kentucky University) has been superb out of the bullpen, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.68 in six appearances. Another impressive pitcher has been freshman Clark Candiotti (St. Mary's University). The 6'5", 235 pound righthander is 2-1 in six games with a 4.15 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 21.2 innings pitched. Clark's father is former major league pitcher Tom Candiotti, the knuckleballer who spent 16 years in the big leagues, including the 1991 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. All of the players on the Flickertails 30-man roster will be eligible to play for the Border Cats next season, including an additional 11 Canadian born players who aren't participating in Bismarck due to the closure of the Canada-United States border. Border Cats manager Mike Steed recruited the Border Cats/Flickertails team, but as he also remains in Canada, the club is being led by assistant coaches Kyle MacKinnon, Brendan Kelly and Joey Gamache. Happy Canada Day Border Cats fans! This time of the summer is such a traditional part of our home schedule with the fireworks show on June 30th and our annual Canada Day game during the afternoon to celebrate our great country's birthday. Pictured below is Jason Vosler sliding home safely during a 5-0 win over the Alexandria Beetles on July 1st, 2013. Vosler, who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs, is now a member of the San Diego Padres organization and spent last season with Triple-A El Paso Chilhuahuas.

The first game of the 2020 Northwoods League season was played last night at the three-team hub based in Bismarck, North Dakota. The hometown Bismarck Larks held off the Mandan Flickertails 6-5. Hey Border Cats fans, it was suppose to be opening night at the stadium this evening against the Eau Claire Express and even the sun managed to come out! All of us are extremely disappointed with the news that there will be no Northwoods League baseball this summer in Thunder Bay, but we'll be back next year and really raring to go! Since we all should have been singing this song together this evening to officially kick off the summer, we thought we'd let you do it from the comfort of your home. Stay safe and stay strong! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=er-pny0vX88
