Shots shots shots! Flu Season is upon us and we have options this year! Warrior Naomi preferred the shot while big sister Lauren opted for the FluMist which is back in stock this year. Thanks to the staff at WalMart Stonegate for ordering this vaccine in for our family.... FluMist is not covered by the province but it was covered by our private insurance plans. Lauren is a fainter with needles so this was a better option for her (she knows to avoid immunocompromised people for the next 2 weeks and Naomi’s immune system is fully operational now). When Mother Nature gives us an ideal introduction to fall and we live only blocks away from some of the prettiest trails in the city, we get the kids showered up, dust off the camera and go play :) Some are willing participants, some are not :) Something as simple as updating family photos is yet another reason on the never ending list of gratitude for science and our little warriors ever present sass or survival instinct.... I still get asked to this day why Naomi is alive when she was only given 14 months to live at one point. The real answer...We don't know. I would like to believe a large dose of faith and love and science is the reason but if it were that simple, all Rhabdo warriors would be alive today. Science is the only path to changing these current life expectancy rates. Every year, I always ask my husband if we should support the Children's hospital or RMH or other charities that do ...so much good and he always asks "what did we want to hear?" - Answer we wanted to hear that she was going to live, and that is the answer we are trying to give to other families. Saving one child from cancer gives them 70 additional life years. Terry Fox Run Pandemic Style! In honour of Terry Fox's 40th anniversary, there were signs all over the city so we biked to Briarwood, College Park, and Wildwood :) Naomi proudly showing off her survivor shirt and her guns.... Science got her here, but it was her unwavering will to live that got her through the brutal treatments. We need to do better for our children as cancer does not discriminate and kids get cancer too. Team Work Tuesdays bring you updates on Canadian paediatric research projects driven by family foundations. The 100% fund was created to answer the need of more directed research at the paediatric cancers that have had little advancements in the past 40 years, like rhabdomyosarcoma. We need to do better than throwing 204 bags of chemo and 28 rounds of radiation at a child. Science needs to do better.... 100% of children diagnosed with cancer need to survive. Anything less is not acceptable. These children are stronger than their cancer, but the cancers are stronger than the science currently fighting it. That is the why behind the 100% fund. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Wear a gold ribbon. Slip childhood cancer facts into everyday conversation. It might feel awkward to begin with but you have to start a conversation to change a conversation. #kidsgetcancertoo

I get a lot of flack for being so picky with our research dollars. Naomi was 1 of 5. I am extremely proud of each and every dollar of our $350 000 donated to research so far as it has all gone to the underdogs via CC-TDI, Terry Fox PROFYLE and the 100% fund.

The drugs are 40 years old, the children are 6 years old Treatments are YEARS in length, not months. Naomi had 50 cycles of chemotherapy, not 5 We put our children first in everything except when it comes to cancer. Then they are last, sometimes dead last.
