A friend in COVID-Need. Early in October, one of our paddlers saw a post by Col. Chris Hadfield about making simple and inexpensive desks for kids. As a teacher, she was anxious to keep her students safe in her school. At that time, it only had large group tables, unsuitable in a COVID world. Wistfully, she commented on that post, dreaming of enough desks for her classroom. A teammate, a hobby carpenter, and an engineer saw this wish. He is always keen to use his skills a...nd knowledge to help others and he decided he could make this fleeting dream into reality, and off he went to the lumber store. With help from his spouse and adult offspring, all within a COVID bubble, they set to work transforming the 5 sheets of plywood and 24 one by sixes into 20 desks. Five days later, the last coat of paint was drying. On Thanksgiving Day, a few paddlers gathered to shuttle the new desks from the garage to the classroom. This short video tells the story of a dream that became real with the help of a few friends.
