Stories, songs, ceremonies and places as memory codes.
Very busy weekend harvesting and preparing materials before winter. A good pile of logs set to dry for next year's bows and a good bunch of beaver incisors set to cure for woodworking tools. Thank goodness tomorrow's Monday, back to the workshop for some rest!
Just finished the bow I started a few days ago. Ash / 72 inches long / 42 lbs tension at 25 inches draw / plant fiber string. Matching arrows with bone and chert points.
Today, I decided to take a break from orders and do something new. After being inspired by some recent publications and a timely conversation with a customer, I decided to make some chert scrapers. More attention is usually given to projectile points has they are good chronological and regional markers but scrapers are much more common in the archaeological record and even though they are most often made with discards and difficult to associate to any specific period or cultu...re, they are good functional markers. They are in fact important tools as they were used for everything from preparing hides to working bone and wood. Since I already have a projectile point typology, I figured I would make a scraper typology. It’s not exhaustive but it does illustrate the main types of scrapers found in Northeastern archaeological sites. This will be joining our teaching collection for future activities. For those who have not yet seen or projectile point typology, it’s available in our catalog: http://files.abotec.ca/photos/typologie_lithique.jpg See more
Since the beginning of the pandemic, I've been limiting my visits to schools except for special occasions. Today I was happy to be back in an elementary classroom to deliver our new workshop on Northwest Coast material culture. https://www.abotec.ca/schools.html In the mean time, Marie has been doing her weekly workout shaping her new bow that started as a half log just last week. Hopefully, we can have our bow making classes available to the public again in the spring. https://www.abotec.ca/classes.html
An interesting story about a 1,000 years old bison scapula.
