Crypto-Extortion is on the rise, but what is it? Crypto-Extortion is when you receive an e-mail from someone who claims to know your passwords, claims they have compromised your system and will share all of your data with the Internet if you don't give them money by some means such as BitCoin, Monero or some other crypto currency. Some will even say they've been watching you on your webcam! It can be pretty scary when you get these e-mails, but the best thing you can do is ta...ke it as a reminder to change your passwords and do not send them money! Thankfully, you can protect yourself from these attacks very easily! 1) Never use the same password for more than one website. This limits your exposure when a breach occurs; a breach is a matter of when, not if! 2) Sign up for haveibeenpwned.com This service will alert you when a breach involving your e-mail address has occurred and let you know which services were compromised so you can change your affected password. 3) Keep your browsers, security software and operating system up to date. New security vulnerabilities are discovered for our devices every day, so it's imperative that we keep them up to date, especially with so much of lives occurring online. All Internet connected devices are potentially vulnerable! 4) Use a password manager to track your passwords and encourage the use of different passwords for every site. Password Managers like Lastpass.com are a great way to have the security of unique passwords without the headache of trying to remember them all. 5) If you get an e-mail that concerns you, consult a qualified technician!
